I think its the timing solenoid, but it was a recall for the 90ps transit, not a connect (although it does fit the tddi connect)

Have traced back to the repair, it was done April 05 under waranty about a month before I bought it, symptoms were lack of power , and noisey. if this was at fault would it put my timing out of range.Regards Tim

Only the advance/retard timing, NOT the static timing of the pump.

You can check the solenoid by measuring the resistance of it, it should be between 9.1 -9.8 ohms (its the 2 black wires that run from the bottom of the pump to the top control module, not the wire that go to the solenoid between the fuel pipes)

May be this will help?
PINPOINT TEST C: POOR ENGINE PERFORMANCE
CHECK THE BOOST PRESSURE

Note:
The boost pressure is factory set and must not be adjusted.
Image
1 Using the tool, connect the boost pressure gauge between the wastegate control actuator and the turbocharger.
2 Start and run the engine until the cooling fan has operated.
3 Raise the engine speed to 3000 rpm and observe the reading.
Is the boost pressure 0.5 bar?
Yes
GO to Fuel Charging and Controls for further diagnostics. I have further diagnostics if this is the case and will list as required
No
Sorry but you need to get yourself another turbocharger.
TEST the system for normal operation.

From the Ford TIS again.
Which one of the Symptom Chart Condition listed below would you chose to best discribe your problem? Then I'll list it if you want.

 I'm only trying to help

CAUTION:
Diesel fuel injection equipment is manufactured to very precise tolerances and fine clearances. It is therefore essential that absolute cleanliness is observed when working with these components. Always fit blanking plugs to any open orifices or lines.

Note:
As well as carrying out its normal function the glow plug indicator also acts as an engine check lamp which will flash continuously when a hard diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is detected by the powertrain control module (PCM). Soft DTCs are also stored by the PCM but will only be known if the system is checked for DTCs using WDS.

Note:
If a DTC is detected, all DTCs must be cleared after the concern is repaired. Failure to clear all DTCs may cause driveability concerns.

Note:
If the fuel level in the fuel tank drops below approximately four litres, rough running will occur. This is to signal to the driver that the vehicle requires refuelling in order to prevent the fuel system from running dry.

1. Verify the customer concern.

2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage.

3. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.

Did you measure the resistance of the solenoid?

What is the fault codes?

don't know what the code is ,have measured the resistance on solonoid 9.1. even spent some time today ond took it out to make sure it works, seems ok, all they said was that it kept comming up as timing out of range and would have to check static timing about 4.5 hours, can't see how that could be wrong, have also looked on the focus forum , loads of people have got this sort of problem but no one knows why, these vans aren't going to be worth jack soon if they have these sort of problems. You can have a go at reading the fault code yourself by using the self-diagnostics mode. It's not really a comprehensive diagnostics tool but you should be able to get the DTC Troubleshooting Codes.

With the ignition off, press and hold the trip reset button on the cluster and then turn the ignition to II or III.

Step 1
Insert Key (do not turn it)
Step 2
Press and hold the Trip-Meter Reset Button.
Step 3
While holding the reset button, start your car and continue holding the button.
Step 4
Within 10 seconds, the display should change to "test" (written in the LCD display) and the needles will go wild. Release the Button.
Step 5
Pressing the button will now cycle through some 15 different modes or more.
Breakdown of some of the functions:
1 Press - Shows a Gauge Sweep
2 Presses - Shows all 8's on the LCD (LCD TEST)
3 Presses - Illuminates all the bulbs on the dash
6 Presses - Shows DTC Troubleshooting Codes [b]This is the one. MAKE A NOTE OF ANY CODES THAT DISPLAY. If there are a few, they will scroll through, untill you get to 0 for the DIGITAL SPEEDOMETER - MPH as below. If there is none it will say n0nE (from memory but not sure)
7 Presses - DIGITAL SPEEDOMETER - MPH
8 Presses - DIGITAL SPEEDOMETER - KPH
10 Presses - DIGITAL TACHOMETER
11.Fuel volume
12. Engine coolant temperature
13. Battery voltage
14. ABS fail
15. Electronic brake distribution (EBD) failure
16. Illumination.
17. Crank Sense

4.5 hours to check the static timing, they are having a laugh

remove the rocker cover
fit the crank timing pin through the hole in the side of the block, check the slot on the end of the cam is in the right place.

If thats right, the pump must be in the right place if it's never been off.

In theory it could slip in the vernier gear, but unless something has happened to the timing chain I doubt it.

That self diagnostic tip on the dash wont read out engine codes, only dash codes.

i'm more worried about the filter minder being sucked down with a new filter in place, have you tried to run the vehicle from a remote low pressure feed? (gallon can)

A restriction in fuel delivery will also bring the timing fault codes.

Yeah i'm a bit worried about the minder, as have seen dirty filters not as restricted, haven't as yet tried to use a can of deisel, just keep running out of time before i have to go to work again, i thought 4.5hrs was a bit steep as i stripped out the timing solonoid and tested in less, thought i had cracked it last week by changing iat by the air filter on induction pipe, went ok , but now slow again, will get myself a timing kit and check.Regards Tim :?
