Quick clear screen and sat nav reception?

Postby M4carp » Tue Dec 02, 2008 9:38 am

Does the quick clear heated screen interfere with sat nav reception, on my old mk6 transit I had to fit an external aerial for my Garmin to work properly and that had a heated screen.

M4Carp,

The info. on here is sometimes worse than the spelling. The heated screen element on the Connect doesn't block the GPS satellite signal. The clue might be in that your man says it 'will' do this, but I'm guessing that once he actually tries this he'll find he's wrong. What I'm not guessing at is my navigating thousand of miles with my own satnav which has worked faultlessly.

There might be a problem with certain brands of kit as the GPS signal is weak. It needs a quality receiver. Suggest you buy a TomTom. You won't need an external aerial I promise you.

I will post up the results when I get around to fitting a pioneer system with built it sat nav, hope it works without the external aerial.
I just tried a garmin street pilot 2620 and the windscreen did block loads of signal but that unit is about 6 years old now.

Do you mean the air conditioning system installed in PSA vans & cars, such as Peugeot & Citroen? These have the option of AirCon combined with an athermic windscreen to reflect the sun's rays back off the surface of the glass, so it doesn't enter the cabin.
As these probably have metal particles embedded in the windscreen (?) there might be be problems with Satnav reception.

My old mk6 wasn't solar coated but was heated and it definately effected the reception, under screen signal low - hang it out window signal high so I had to fit an external aerial and does the same thing in the connect, maybe its just the Garmin streetpilot that does it?

IME the athermic screens and heated screens will reduce the signal that's available to a sat nav. The early Tom Tom Go300 etc was awful in my Transit with a heated screen and wouldn't work at all in our car which had an athermic screen, thankfully I bought a Go510 which worked a treat. So the good news is that any sat nav with a SiRF Star III chip or later will have no issues.
