At one time there was a big rumour going around that banded steel wheels were illegal :?:

I found this not to be the case - After I had contacted VOSA in February 2009 reguarding Banded wheels For my Hot-Rod project, this was their reply :-

Reply Direct form VOSA - having been given the exact details of Banded steel wheels:

Quote

There are no specific regulations in the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986, as amended (C&U) relating to the type of work you propose.
Regulation 100 of C&U does require that all parts fitted to a vehicle are not likely to cause a danger to the user of the vehicle or other road users. I have attached a copy of Regulation 100.
Additionally, you will need to ensure that the wheels do not protrude from the wheel arches, or that modifications are made to the bodywork of the vehicle to ensure that the wheels do not protrude.

Yours sincerely

Although wheel banding quickly died out due to the introduction of the Alloy wheel :D, There are still some Proffesional companies that still do them, but most of them now do the common Re-Rimmed wheels instead.
Bassically the existing wheel centres are removed & then refitted to wider rims, This make them more stronger & safer than banded wheels.

The banded wheels of this connect surely do stick out way too much  I wonder how many penalty points this guy has ! (3 points per wheel & that equals a driving ban)

& they are on ebay !

Advise if you are using banded steel wheels

1. Make sure they are done by a proffessional company - (There are companies in the UK that specialise in banded / re-rimmed wheels & are certificated - very handy of you do get pulled over or for MOT time)

2. Always fit correct sized tyres - Do NOT stretch the tyres on a LGV as it is illegal, as they can pop of the rim when vehicle is loaded :!: - (correctly sized tyres can be obtained, but can be very expensive) :!:

3. Make sure the wheels do not protrude from wheel arches (or fit a wider wheel arch kit)

Be safe & legal, rather than being landed with a hefty fine & several penalty points

I'm not stretching like the VW boys do. It shouldn't be very noticeable tbh

Paul,

It would be 3 points for the offence not per tyre. You could have 4 bald tyres and it would be 3 points for the offence.
As I found out many moons ago.
In relation to the wheels I think they are hideous. I'd rather have steel wheels with pretty hubcaps on.
Saw a VW Golf recently. Half the wheels were in the arches. And he thinks they look 'cool'.

Didn't do anything today to the van apart from order up a roof spoiler for my winter project.
Had a visitor to my work today (Valetech) and had a good chat about a few ideas and bits. He had a good bit of something in his van, hopefully he can sort it for me to fit on the van!
Nothing to disclose at the moment as it may not fit!

Yes thats what it used to be, But the law has changed, They now can issue FIxed penalty notice 2 tyes at the same time (£120 fine & 6 Points), But depends on the officers discretion. But if you go to magitrates courts they can ban you from driving & fine you up £2500 per tyre !

But if you have 4 defective tyes they can legally have the vehicle impounded & taken of the road straight away. (Dangerous/ unroadworthy condition)

Yes yours is a mk1 connect & mk1 grills do fit with the mk2 fromt bumper, But I am fitting a mk2 grill to mine.

A mk2 grill should fit straight onto your connect, as it has the steel slam panel fitted.

where mine had the plastic slam panel (fitted to connects from 2002-2003). I had to change it to the steel one so I could fit this mk2 grill
