Position number 1 the side lights come on really used for parking on roads with no lights or in use with fog lights in really bad fog if the back glare is really bad used with dip beam off. Also can be used in heavy rain ,If you have daylight running lights it will turn them off.
Position 2 will be dipped beam + side lights can be used with front or rear fog lights
Then it’s down to the dip/ main beam switch to select main beam when not affecting oncoming traffic can be used with spotlight that go out when switched back to dip lights
Number 3 on modern vehicles will be automatic lights that turn on as it gets dark some vehicles also have automatic dipping headlights.
And automatic cornering lights
As the op commented on new cars the headlights are getting to bright the RAC has been on the news last week saying that they are now to bright and blinding on coming drivers .for me drivers with the better main beam tend not to dip
The lighting regulations say 55 W dip 65 W main beam I think now it should be classified by lumens nowadays you can even get dazzled by oncoming cyclists LED light bulbs are that good.
Ok given all the other replies about differing light configurations it seems I have no parking lights and have the "high end" foglights
I am also still quite sure the light is only 5w as stated in the manual and the links I posted earlier.
I am interested to buy some new bulbs to see how much difference they will make. Going from 5w to 55 surely would make a massive difference, 11x one may expect! Even the lowest end modern budget bulb will probably make huge improvement.
