how do i hand prime a diesel engine?

Postby aj1soad » Mon Oct 08, 2012 8:02 pm

I think ive got air in the fuel system on my 03 tdci so i was going to try and hand prime it. ive already ordered another filter. do i need something likehttp://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10mm-Fuel-Pri ... 53ef0ef709 or is it worth spending a bit more on something like http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/p/tools ... 5&0&t5_413 anyway how would i go about doing it? if i need one of those pumps where do i actually connect it? thanx

This engine should be self bleeding, you need to find where the air came in and cure the leak. When its all airtight the engine should fire up without the need to hand prime.

Undo the nuts at the bottom of the injectors (where a 5mm metal pipe goes in) and get someone to crank the engine. Do each one and that will bleed any air from the filter to the engine. It's worth a try. Replace the filter first and fill it with diesel to the brim via the inlet nozzle on top.

Do not undo injector pipes whilst cranking as the system needs to be a sealed system and the pressure can go up to 1350 Bar and can kill you.
Put a hand primer in between fuel filter and fuel pump but NEVER EVER crank with pipes undone on TDCI unless you wanna try killing yourself.

That's how you bleed air from the injectors is it not? Obviously not undoing then completely, just enough to let the air out until the diesel flows.

Not on a tdci. Tddi is ok to do that but not on tdci due to pressures.

i tried to prime diesel into the engine today but i went through 4 litres of diesel and it still wanted more. im not sure if i was putting diesel into the correct hole on the filter but it was the one on the right with the arrow pointing down towards one of the nozzles. was that the correct one? when i had a pipe from the container into the fuel filter and i was turing the engine over it was taking alot of diesel but im not sure where it was actually going cos i went through so much. was i doing it right?
