Awkward/prolonged start up?

Postby mekmanuk » Tue Oct 09, 2012 7:33 pm

My 53 tdci (bought recent) and been in my garage having work done. Ive noticed its a little awkward\to start when cold? i notice the heater plug light goes out pretty quick?

All glow plugs are new and working fine, even fitted a push button thinking this would do the trick but to no avail.

it fires up after 15 secs or so but dont want the cold weather to cause me probs? i have a brand new battery fitted also.

not sure what i can do if anything to try to resolve this problem, any advice or ideas would be gretaly appreciated.

forgot to say she runs fine when running!

Try a new starter and check the timing belt as my old 04 focus was the same and when i changed the starter and re did the belt as it was not set right the car started on the button every time
p/s does it start better when it's hot ?

Pull one of the glows out and check the part number is 100% correct for your van, have you checked the voltage at the glows when pressing your button
Please don't send me PM's, i can't access them, when I try I get this:

My 51 plate tdci focus was the same and is a common prob with this engine. the glow plug light would stay on for one second only which is controlled by the GM module apparently..After many searches on this i was advised to put a stronger battery on with a cold cranking amps of 750 instead of the 550 it had on and it was a lot better.
Hope that helps :D

our tdci did this, changed the glow plugs, fitted a bigger battery and swapped the starter but it still did it, did an injector leak off test and they were all over the place, sent the injectors off for a referb and she now starts in less than 2 seconds on a cold morning :D

Thanks for the replies fellas, the glow plugs are all new, i will check them thou to see if there the right ones. Ill also look at the battery. starts ok when hot.

I had all new injectors fitted, when you mention the timing i assume you mean the timing chain?

Hi, not the timing chain but the timing belt. i would invest in a haynes manual for ya van and you will have a clearer picture of things..the timing chain ( Gemini )runs from the crank to the injection pump and generally dont need replacing unless very high mileage. What size is your battery ?

the batter is brand new, checked with supplier and correct one (100) 650 amp i think. i know the timing chain and belt, i will check it aswel. I do know the starter on it is off a 51 plate focus when the engines hot it seems to spin over better than when cold so im suspecting maybe a lazy starter?

Before you start it turn ignition on and off a few times and the glow plugs will give it a boost if its cold outside
