MIL lamp / power loss solved

Postby SBRacing » Tue Oct 30, 2012 6:21 pm

Hi All,

I've been very busy reading all the old threads regarding the dreaded MIL lamp / Power loss usually leading to mega expensive injector and/or fuel pump replacement.

I have a TDCi 90bhp LWB van used mainly for towing my small race car to meetings. Being greedy and wanting something for nothing I recently bought a tuning box from an ebay seller. Once fitted all seemed ok , maybe a bit smoother power delivery but nothing special on the supplied setting. I upped the setting a couple of times as detailed in the leaflet that came with it. On the motorway going to work the MIL came on (glowplug lamp flashing then solid with power cut). Limped it to work. Set box setting back to original level expecting things to be ok - they were not......

Lamp kept coming back on at anything over about 25% throttle , on hills , any gear etc etc...

Tuning box then removed from the van completely - Same thing still happening.....oh dear !.

This is where I've been desperately scanning the threads here to find anything similar. I couldn't see anything.

Expecting the worst I have just spent an afternoon working on it trying to find the problem. DTC P0251 Fuel system pressure was stored and kept coming back when driven. I had noticed some diesel smell around injectors 1 & 2 (nearest drive belt end of the engine). Following older threads I expected this to be the injectors having excessive leak off and to need replacement. As a last resort I have brake cleanered off the whole injector / pump area. My van has a 'Remanufactured by Ford' sticker already on the pump so this must have been replaced at some point prior to my purchase. Anyway, having a final drive to see if I could find the leak has hit the jackpot!!.

The main pressure feed pipe area on the back of the pump was wet when rechecked. The main high pressure feed pipe has just taken approx 1/8 turn of tightening. Retested the van out on the road ------BINGO !! Problem solved.. I have been absolutely ragging it so i'm sure this must be ok !.

Hopefully this may help one of you - it was doing my head in !.

Simon.
