Loss of coolant

Postby Andy1984 » Sat Dec 08, 2012 10:36 pm

Hi guys, a week ago I noticed that my coolant level was very low so I topped it up to the max level as you do. Then when I checked again today it was between full and half way. I found a hose which is on the right hand side of the expansion tank which I think is the upper radiator hose which has been bodged up(gonna replace Monday). I couldn't see anything with the engine off so I turned the engine on and noticed a few drips from the bodged up hose but as the engine warmed it stopped. I've hardly used my van this last week but would that small leak drain that much coolant??

I looked at everything else to do with the coolant system but couldn't see any leaks. Any advice would be very much welcomed

I thought mine was the EGR cooler but it turned out to be the water pump. It was losing coolant for a couple of weeks but only like half of it over the course of 5-7days. I thought it was te EGR cooler and was getting bits together to bypass it but then noticed a second spot of liquid on the ground one day and it was coolant not the usual drop of oil from a leaky seal somewhere.

Did you lose the coolant when you were running your van or when it was stationary?

I was only losing it when it was running. Hence why I originally thought it was the cooler. Only once I noticed the drips on the drive did I realise it was the water pump.

I've never seen any drips on the drive or anywhere other than a dodgy pipe which I replaced today. Is it worth removing the water pump? How would I know if it was knackered
