Postby hotlimepickle » Sat Feb 09, 2013 12:49 pm

Hi all, looking for some help and advice. I need to change the nearside drive shaft. can anyone tell me what size hub nut socket i need, and what type of balljoint seperator works best? I need the van for work on monday so its now or never!
Many thanks.

OK. Struggling with this and getting nowhere. Got the hub nut off. have a scissor type ballpoint separator. Do I need to take off the brake cylinder and disc to get in with this? Can't see how else it can be done. Never used one before. Assuming I ever get it off, how do you get it back on again? Thanks.
Edit: I have removed the brake cylinder and disc. There is a thin metal plate between where the disc would be and the ball joint, I have bent this out of the way. The ball joint separator doesn't look like it will fit in anywhere, too small? the gap between the prongs is 18 mm.

You can do the job without removing the ball joint, undo the 15mm bolt to release the shock at the top of the hub, using a hammer knock the hub down removing from hub down.
Remove shaft.

Ok. I am trying this method(day 2 ) I removed the wheel, hub nut, brake calliper. loosened the ball joint nut. loosened the 15mm bolt right off but not removed. I am club hammering the hub downwards and it only moves about 10mm. What am I doing wrong? (Other than doing it myself  )
Thank you...
EDIT: Did I mention I had poor eyesight? I have now REMOVED the 15mm bolt to allow the hub to come off the shock. I have drawn the drive shaft out of the hub, though there was not a lot of free play. I am now at the stage where I have to get the old shaft off......

Now take the shaft out of the gearbox. If doing the drivers side remember to undo the 2 x 13mm nuts / bolts which hold the bearing piece on the driveshaft to the lower block.

It doesn't want to just slide out, like I hoped. I can't see how you can get in to lever it as there isn't enough room to get a lever in. I am not tackling the driver's side today. I am just trying to get the passenger side one done so I can drive it tomorrow, then worry about the driver's side when I get more time. It feels like if I just pull hard on the drive shaft it is going to separate in to two pieces?

On the passenger side you will see a small cut out in the bottom arm. Stick the crow bar in between the gearbox and inner joint and then put the body of the crow bar into the cut out. Then whack forwards on it and it will pop out. Make sure gearbox is in neutral.
By the way weather is nice here!!

Sorry, I know when you visualise it it seems straight forward, but that doesn't make sense to me. I can't see where you can even get a screwdriver in let alone a crow bar. I keep staring at it but can'y see it! I am glad the weather is nice where you are! it is hammering down here and blowing a gale. I didn't want to turn up at yours with conditions like this going on and that's what the forecast said yesterday.

these are not the easiest shafts to change on the passenger side if ur really struggling take the 13mm bolt out of the rear stabiliser g/box mount which will allow the gearbox to swing forwards and should give you a bit more room to get pry bar or screwdriver in :?:
if its not broke drive it harder

If you send me a photo of the passenger side with the wheel off I will edit pic to show you where to put the bar.
