Am I being robbed?

Hello lads I'm new to the forum and having some troubles with my connect. The engine management light has come on and my mechanic has told me its an intermittent fault on my egr valve. He said to change it its gonna cost around £700. I've read on the forum that its a b*stard of a job and I take this into consideration. Is cleaning the egr valve and the intake out and fitting a blanking plate and an induction kit a solution? I don't know a terrible lot about cars so any advice would be good advice. Ta.

it all depends what year the van is as nobody knows as you haven't said, the egr valve is internal inside the inlet manifold, to get the inlet manifold off the exhaust manifold has to come off first yes you can clean it out and blank it off but if its failing electrically then it will require a new one, although if its after 06 and one of the new tdci engine it may just need a pcm update

Hello sorry for the bad information. The van is a connect 1.8 tdci on a 57 plate.

I'm gonna get a second opinion this week hopefully. The van is running a little sluggish. Just want to be sure that I'm spending the right sort of doe and got getting fist f*cked by the mechanic.
