Thermostat location and changing?

Postby gt_addict » Sun May 19, 2013 8:19 pm

Hi guys,

Could someone tell me where the thermostat is and what's needed to remove and replace it please?

I know I'm going to need to refill the coolant a bit if its anywhere near the bottom of the engine.

Thanks,

Peter.

I think its at the front of the engine under the intercooler, I think thats where it was when I changed mine, 3 small bolts hold the top on, cant be 100% as it was 6 months ago and I cant remember yesterday
Please don't send me PM's, i can't access them, when I try I get this:

Nice one thanks mate. Just got to find a decent replacement rather than having fords give me a new arsehole.

Not to bad I think from Fords, cant remember what I paid but it wasnt a fortune, I always find with things like that its best to go for original parts, engine running to cold is just as bad as engine running to hot and for the sake of an extra 20 quid its worth paying to have the engine running as it was designed to do

Very true. I'm only thinking of replacing it as the van takes ages in winter to heat up I could drive a good 5 miles giving it the beans and it would still only just come up of bottom of the gauge. I've got an auxillary coolant heater that I've got to wire up and fit ready for next year but my mechanic mate said start with a new thermostat as his old tddi engine he's fitted to his van warms up within half a mile or so. Which mine still doesn't do even in the nice weather we've had lately.

Thermostat housing is bolted to the engine block

It would be best to drain coolant system before replacing thermostat

Sorry to revive this old thread.

But do I really have to drain the coolant out completely? Can I not get away with clamping the hose and removing any airlocks that are in it (if there are any)?

You don't have to drain the whole coolant system, It's something I normally do.

when removing thermostat you will lose a fair bit of coolant, due to the engine block & head is drained.
These engines do take a while to heat up

I know they do take a while, it's an old style Diesel engine ;) but after a few miles the top rad hose is slightly warm so I'm guessing the stat is stuck open at least slightly.
