Small issue after changing HT leads and Plugs

Postby Connect1969 » Fri Sep 07, 2018 8:42 pm

Hi

I have a 54 Reg Connect 1.8 Petrol

I had an issue (not all of the time) where if I had parked up after a journey for a short time it didn't want to start 1st time, so I had the HT leads and plugs changed (Bosch not cheap rubbish) , anyway I now have an issue of when slowing to park in a car park as an example the revs die down to virtually the point of stalling, this may have nothing to do with changing the leads and plugs but any ideas are welcome,

Cheers

May be a throttle body issue?? Idle control etc? Get a good used one and try it. I did the same on my escort 1.6 Zetec years ago. Just my tuppence worth.

Hi Kenton,

Thanks for your reply, I did wonder if it's worth changing the coil pack , I'm not very mechanically minded to be honest , I did ask the garage that fitted plugs and leads their opinion as no fault lights are on, mechanic said he thought a coincidence rather than related to the change

Hi, that's also a very viable option! All these bits can be picked up for peanuts online or at a breakers, so if you have not got the finances to book it in for a full diagnosis, it MAY be worth replacing these bits and seeing how you go! Loads of these engines still around as the same lump can be found in focus's, Escorts, and Mondeo's, so you are not short of bits mate.

Hi Kenton,

I've been out in the van and basically went on the motorway for approx 20 miles no problem, when I came off and was having to dip clutch to change down gears the rev counter dropped quickly to almost cutting out, it did this a few times, the tick over sounds a bit weak and slightly lumpy under foot when stationary (eg waiting at traffic lights)

I have ordered a Bosch coil pack as I think I can change this myself ??
I don't think I can do any damage ?? and I'm hoping this might be the problem ?

Cheers

I don't know if the 1.8 suffers the same way, but my 1.6 Zetec had a problem where there was water accumulating in the plug recesses and intermittently shorting the sparks causing it to falter, particularly when going round corners, or braking (when the water would swoosh around the plug tops) This problem with mine caused the coil pack to fail as well.
It may be worth pulling a plug lead out and seeing if there's any water in there

Thanks for this will do, it's just weird that I didn't have this particular problem before the plugs and leads were swopped over, it's the usual thing "it doesn't do it all the time" -!!

Thanks again, will take a look

Check the breather behind the inlet manifold for splits

Hi

I might have to ask someone to show me what that is, sorry I'm not very up on this stuff

I have looked at how the coil pack is fitted, I have one on order , I reckon I can change it as it look easy enough ?...

Do I have to disconnect battery or anything or can I just un bolt and replace do you know ??

Thanks for all the suggestions as I am new to this , my van is really great, brill condition as an ex SOCO van even though it's 14 years old, I've spent a few quid on it making it look good and had suspension bits done, cambelt, oil leaks etc so just need to sort this issue out to make it all good

You don't need to disconnect the battery to change the coil pack, but I would advise against doing it with the engine running  :P

Morning all,

So , you will be pleased to know I didn't change the coil pack whilst the engine was running

I am quite chuffed that I have managed to do this without taking to the garage, to be fair it is pretty easy to do even for me

I have taken the van on a run and it hasn't done the issue of when I dip the clutch the revs come tumbling down and van nearly cutting out , also seems steady on tick over , I am not going to count my chickens just yet but will let you know how it goes in case it helps others in the future if they have the same problem

So I have now changed to Bosch Super 4 plugs, Bosch HT leads and a Bosch Coil Pack

Oh Bosch !!

Thanks all for your help
