Crank & Cam sensor surprising results

Postby Piglet » Fri Sep 14, 2018 12:56 pm

My tame mechanic advised me to change both cam & crank sensors as part of tracking down a stubborn glitch.
It didn't fix the problem but,
I was surprised at the improvement made by each sensor in terms of general smooth progressive response.
The van had become a bit rough around the edges, now it drives almost like a new one. Well worth the 10 quid each.

If I could only find the cause of the feking glitch.

Just out of curiosity Piglet, what was your original glitch consisting of? Been interesting reading about the two sensors, as i have just replaced my cam sensor before the injectors, so wondering if i too should also replace the crank sensor??

Cheers as ever.

Bit hard to describe on paper but only happens when at full temperature, part throttle & light medium load, eg. cruising up gentle incline in 4th.
Best described as 'random hiccup' like my old AP50 moped just starting to suck air.
I can see the fault in For scan as small downward spikes in live data so it's not my imagination, and it hasn't always done it, just started this spring.
Very irritating and reading up I'm not alone but there doesn't seem to be a simple fix.

As I am unable to locate part numbers, would you be so kind (if you know them), and if they are applicable to 2004 1.8 TDCi 90ps

Thanks.

I expect they are for 02 - 13 as there appear to be a lot of parts that stayed the same over the 11 years. It gives me a starting point though, so thank you for that Monsieur Le Piggy.

Footnote - I may have found the air ingress problem causing my spluttering at start-up. Seems that the fuel in pipe that is on the side of the pump is weeping from the banjo bolt connection so, if fuel is slowly oozing out then air must be replacing it in the pipe. Gonna change the copper crush washers and see if that sorts it. If not - it'll be your sensors. If that fails, it'll be a one-way ticket to Switzerland!
