Lubricating Door Locks?

Postby axxeman » Thu Apr 18, 2019 7:36 pm

Ok, sounds simple enough but what's the best or preferred way ..? Do you:

1. Stick the WD40 straw into the lock and give it a couple of squirts, then work the lock a few times or
2. Stick the 3 in 1 SILICONE LUBE straw into the lock and do as above, or
3. Other ...

Also, my bonnet lock is getting antsy and turning the key requires a bit of fiddling whilst keeping pressure on until you find the sweet spot. Is that the barrel going west or the mechanism? (Old and new keys behaving exactly the same).

2004 TC 1.8 TDCi 90ps

So many choices ... thanks.

Graphite is the best lubricant for a lock, but not something we all have kicking about in the garage.
I use a Teflon based spray lube in mine, It's called TF2, but I'm sure that there are others.
I'm not sure about Silicone in a lock mechanism :?
WD40 is great for un-seizing things that are seized or sticking, but it's not a great long time lubricant :)

Good stuff - the two I listed are what I have to hand. I wonder how or what graphite would do given that most locks may be oily inside already (from past owners' efforts)? Kind of imagine it mixing together and making a sticky paste ...

The silicone is great round the house for squeaky doors.

I'll check out the Teflon stuff. Thanks.

Ended up ordering a small graphite aerosol from FleaBay for under 4 quid - That should be plenty rather than having a big one hanging round for ever and a day ...

Again, thanks for the advice.
