cutting out , glow plug light on.

hi, i have just joined the forum & would like some help with a 2006 tdci 1753 connect 180k. bought last night. when pulling out of a juction the van emitted quite a lot of black smoke, which cleared after 30 or so yards. it then drove fine 5 miles until we reached the a1 motorway ( darlington to tyneside) we got to 55 mph, and the glow plug light started flashing then the engine cut out. a quick off/on of ignition switch & it drove ok , until it happened again. 7 times in total. there was a drop in power/speed. ( no black smoke) we got it home. plugged in a ms300 maxiscan and got PO 251 code. ( injection pump metering control a) would the problem be the fuel injection pump/injectors/sensors ? is this a common fault? also found very dirty air filter.which wont help. i will be changing all filters/oil etc in next few days. thank you for any help/info. steve @hebburn.

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like you have the ealier 2003-2005 Connect - (Ford badge on Bonnet) equipped with Delph fuel system (Delphi Injectors & Fuel pump).
This is a very common fault to worn out injectors & fuel pumps wearing out internally.

1st Replace fuel filter. - Also cut open old filter to check for swarf (metal fragments) if present. New Fuel pump 7& 4 new injectors are required.

2nd. If no swarf in old fuel filter. perform a injector leak off test. this will confirm if injectors are worn out resulting in excessive leak off.
If excessive leak off is confirmed - Often best to replace all 4 injectors in this case.

3rd Replace IMV (inlet metering valve on fuel pump.

I had the same symptoms. Turned out to be my injectors. Deffo get a diagnoses from a diesel specialist, and go from there.
Good luck mate.
