Ignition switch failure ?

Postby Saracen » Mon Jan 20, 2020 6:07 pm

The last couple of weeks, my 2010 Connect has been playing up when starting.

When cold, I turn the key round to II, until the glow light goes out, then start her up. That all worked OK.
But when hot, if I turned the key all the way to III in one go, all the dash lights would go out and no start.

Yesterday, after a frost, I did the normal cold start procedure, but when I turned the key to III, all I got was a click.

Now I don't get anything, even with a second battery attached.

Playing around yesterday, I found if I wiggle the key in the ignition, the dash lights flicker and can go out. Could it be that III no longer connects properly ?

Anyone had to replace the ignition switch contacts ? The contacts are cheap as, so I've ordered one from ebay, just to eliminate it.

Ignition switch failure is a common problem, its on the end of the key barrel, ten mins to change (just unclips) after removing steering column panel and cheap :D

Ignition switch arrived today. Swapped that over. No change :-(

At least I can wiggle the key and the lights stay on, so a fault fixed but not the fault.

Found it! Was sure I'd checked all the fuses but F12 was dead. Swapped with another and blows as soon as I try and crank it :-(

Sounds like its shorting out somewhere, time to get the multimeter out!

Fuse ID can be found here if you haven't got them already.

Thanks for the info :-).

I looked along the loom but couldn't see any obvious shorts. However, next time I tried, it started first time, so I obviously 'fixed' the short when looking.

I couldn't get under it as it was on a gravel drive, but now it's running again I'll get it to somewhere I can jack it up properly and then trace along that solenoid feed cable until I find the short.
