Thermostat/heating/temperature issue

I was having an issue with my connect not reaching the proper temperature. (Running too cold) so I replaced the thermostat but since having done so I have no heating in the van and it's also rising well above the temperature it should be at. Could this just be a faulty thermostat even though its new? Any other ideas?

Thanks for the reply,

I've tried letting the engine warm up with the expansion cap off and squeezing various hoses to try and get it moving but it doesn't seem to have made any difference.

Also the pipe going to the right of the radiator (coming from the thermostat housing) is not getting warm at all so I'm assuming the thermostat isn't opening?!
