Rear door threshold mysterious holes

Postby s2martin » Wed Apr 07, 2021 1:24 pm

I've got a 2003 Connect, which was in a state when I bought it as it's been used for work for nearly 20 years! I'm currently replacing the rear bumper, and at the same time I'm going to respray the rear door threshold so when I put a floor in the van with a trim on the end it looks neater. I've removed the strike plate (bad idea, another story!), and have bought a cover for the spare wheel bolt hole, but there are two other holes in the threshold (circled in the photo) and I've no idea what they are for. I was hoping someone with a MK1 van could confirm whether they just have covers on them (and what they may be called so I can search for them!) or of they are for something else as whatever was in them was missing when I bought the van. Thanks :)

Mine is a 2013, US model. I have two holes that are similar, but different. Mine do not appear to be original, kind of rough edged and not quite symmetrically located. My guess is that they were used to keep ramps in place... Pins or bolts through the holes to keep the ramps from sliding off. I have rubber plugs in them. (plugs came in a grommet assortment)

Thanks for the info, it seems the MK1 is a little different here, the holes in mine definitely look like they came out of the factory like that. I could get some grommets to blank them, I'm just curious as to what they are for! :?:

Thanks both for confirming. Perhaps they were for ramps then, I'll just blank them off with some caps then. Cheers!

Just an update on this - I bought 1 x 20mm and 1 x 25mm rubber bungs from ebay. The 20mm fitted the right hand hole perfectly, and I then filed the other hole into a 25mm circle and fitted the other one - looks much neater now when I add the floor up to the threshold :D

Nice paint. You had previously said you thought the holes were OEM. But, I think you've showed that to be less likely... the left hole being bigger, and, in the original pic, it also seemed a bit oval.

Thanks, a little rough but much better than before! I'm pretty sure the holes were from the factory, as the left hole was the same diameter as the right one, just elongated - it was the same size as a couple of holes with grommets in that I found behind the bumper too. I just filed it out to a 25mm hole so I could get a regular round grommet in it.
