Roof sealant repair/replacement?

Postby SandyHenderson » Sat Apr 10, 2021 8:19 pm

Not sure what to call these rubbery long strips on the roof? I've got a self converted camper so need to make sure it's water tight. Currently no leaks but was hoping I can easily repair these? I slapped hammerite over some corrosion spots on the roof last October just to help protect it longer and noticed the rubber strips are cracked in places. I painted over it to help protect the van from leaks but was wondering what can I do for a better fix?

Thanks pal! I'm sure I've looked at this stuff before but never thought much of it at the time. If this stuffs not going to rot the metal work then I could use it for to help fill the holes once I remove my roof rack too, instead of silicone! Im also curious if someone's installed a radio antenna on the roof of my van and use sikkaflex to fill the hole when they decided to remove it. I'll post a picture of that part of the roof later to see if you reckon it's the same stuff used. Thanks again bud

Sikkaflex is a flexible seam sealant designed to seal the gap between two panels, and unlike silicone, it doesn't harden, but stays flexible.
You can use it to seal any gaps or small holes, but a larger hole really needs a blind grommet which you could also seal with the sealant.

Just ordered a tube! As for roof rack holes I'm getting the plugs and I'll add some sikaflex before I put them in for extra reassurance. Thanks for the tip about the grommets too! I'll keep that in mind for future repairs. Top man!
