MK1 Connect alloy wheel studs

Postby metalworker0 » Sat May 08, 2021 11:30 am

Re- posted as i thought this fairly important and wasn't getting attention where i posted it .

I'm sure studs have to be changed
...I've just bought a 2006 connect with what looks like ford alloys on it...taken them off yesterday...and it seems like the studs are too short ..each nut only held on by about 4 threads ...something not right - this van has had those wheels on for a good few years by the looks of it ..

And am i right in saying: to change the front studs, the hub has to come off ..and that means destroyed wheel bearing - so need new bearings and studs

Rear wheels ..by taking the four bolts out at the rear of the drum.......can the studs be got at ...or do i need to buy new "multi segmented nuts" before I to take them off .

all the best..mark

also this

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/114768447361 ... SwFBlfglB9

a different wheel nut is available that may overcome this problem , perhaps giving me an extra 3 threads

And why they sell then in 4's ans 16's i don't know , should be 5's or 20's

ok further investigation .

all nuts are incorrect ..

there was one rogue one on there that was correct

this has a swivelling cone shaped washer, and the threads go all the way to the end of the cone...so has nearly 8 threads that engage.

will try and find a set of them.

The nut with the swivel washer is a Ford nut for alloys as it has a tapered end to fit in to the wheel holes
Newer Ford nuts don’t have the swivel washer any more but still fit the same
Also do nuts up to 130Nm

Thanks , think the main thing is that the threads go all the way to the end of the cone ..those on it now have a recess without threads of about 7mm, so no good at all.

all the best...mark

BOUGHT THESE,
Cheapest ..I could find that where in the UK ...Chinese seller who has a warehouse here, 2 day postage . delivered this morning, tried them on with a wheel today.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/303718599811

Despite picture showing excess of slop between washer (probably he has chosen one that had a lot of slop to show off the washer in picture)..........they aren't actually like that , They are very well made, quite precise, have no excess of slop and fit perfectly, nice looking chrome, not nickel plated, unless it polished nickel - threads all the way to end of cone - they do the job, well pleased with them, will they rust ..i don't know . i do know that they are a lot better than what was on there before and at an excellent price, great value for money.
So recommended :)

Btw ..right after i left feedback for him he put the price up ..i paid £13.49 delivered

Moral of this story
Don't use your steel wheel nuts on the alloys, as you only have 3 threads holding them on !

Have a look here and you will see what i mean -- picture 3, Note: no threads in the last bit of the cone

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/273322298804&seller=&toolid=10018&92305967" rel="nofollow">https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/273322298804 ... SwucVbMkYH

Make sure and check if you have alloys on, that this dangerous situation isn't happening with your wheels
