Postby KowalskiT230 » Sat May 15, 2021 9:23 am

Hi, today I shall be trying to change out the crankshaft oil seal for the 6th time I'm after advice, knowledge, p;sstaking if it leaks this time I shall be putting it on the bay, I started this job last Sept by now it should be halfway to being a camper, w/ender,dayvan but so far I've driven it for 1 week for its MOT. Two weeks ago pulled timing cover off again stripped oil pump all good, oil light goes off when started
So pump, oil relieve valve all working I've watched half a dozen utube vids by "skilled" and not so mechs, followed them to the letter got all the correct tools and it still leaks what am I doing wrong I'm at the end off my frayed tether talk about mental health probs I've never had this many probs doing such a simple job HELP !!

This reply is a general one from experience , but not connect experience
Could be wear on the crankshaft, dinge all the way around that the seal has made.
if may be possible to reposition the seal so that the crankshaft rotates with unworn part against lip of seal...this could be done with shims etc.

also ..for parts like this ..only genuine ford ones will do...some seals will have spiral grooves in the rubber that redirect oil back to the engine, ford may have these ..and cheap ones don't.

also sometimes you are meant to take the last main bearing journal cap off, clean it and seal around it with silicon.

Some oil seals come with a plastic sleeve type installer so that you don't pinch the seal

worst case ..you cant reposition it ........and you have to take the crank out and take it to a specialist engine re-conditioner ..and have it metal sprayed, then reground.

other things - clutch flywheel bolts can sometimes leak making you think the oil seal has gone. new bolts sometimes come with built in sealant on the threads ....if you are using the old ones then you need to use a special loctite anaerobic (sets without air) thread sealer.
but isnt the oil pump on the other side ?
crankshaft end float ..if your crankshaft has this ..it may also be the cause .

other causes ..worn out engine - piston blow by ..making pressure in the crankcase
or blocked breather .

you dont say if petrol or diesel either

is this any good

half way through, shows timing casing alignment tool - would imagine this is a very important step to centring the seal

you could still have wear on the PULLEY that rotates in the seal

The alignment tool is only applicable if you change the gasket under the cover.
but if that cover was ever put on misaligned then the misalignment will go on forever.

Note you cant loosen the bolts and align it, without taking it off and putting a new gasket in, as the gasket is deformable steel and one use only.

see from other post you made here ...that you did take that cover off , and you were advised about alignment
