Ford transit connect dwellers, a few questions...

Postby kisangoli78 » Fri Jul 23, 2021 4:14 am

For anyone dwelling in the transit connects:

How do you find the reliability of the car?

How are the cost of repairs and maintenance services?

Common issues with this vehicle?

Would you recommend for dwelling?

Is there a particular year that is better than others?

I'm very interested in going this route. I always hear fords aren't very reliable, but I'd like to get input from this community.

well depends on how new you want the vehicle to be ..no use me telling you as i have a 2006 one .

i can tell you though about expenses you may be in for at future dates:
1. Diesel models made after mid 2007 have a wetbelt and its recommend its changed before 100,000 or engine destruction imminent. will cost £800 plus for garage to change it this, this is not including the cambelt price. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-l6-JUImJQw
2. Anything with TDCI written it is going to cost you lots of money when the injectors play up - possibly over £1000 to fix - again around or before 100,000 and beyond.
3. Rust ...they rust in the sill regions ..some very badly from the inside out - lots of bodges about - bad fixes - to get through MOT ....may look like a patchwork quilt covering up even more serious rust within. which even the most experienced will not be able to see or identify without cutting it open, Rough looking repairs are the biggest clue to whats gone on - also repairs can look neat .....you still want have a clue whats gone on
4.Genuine ford part prices - if you are buying a part from a ford dealer - think of a maximum price that you'd most likely to pay for it and then times it by 10
5. models by year ..i bought a 2006 one have had to do a lot of work on it fixing the sills , but engine is the lowest 75hp version........has no TDCI OR wetbelt so as far as I'm concerned wont cost me massive money to keep going.
dwelling ..i know nothing - but above needs to take priority

With todays modern electrics and emmissions regs there's not really any such thing as a reliable vehical, it all depends on how well you keep up with the servicing IMHO, i've seen many transit ambulances with well over 400K miles on them, regular, propper maintanance and they will go on for as long as the supposedly "reliable" merc sprinters.
Having said that the 1.8 is a good unit, a little old in the tooth but in reality that makes it more robust IF you keep on top of the servicing, later 1.4 and 1.6 TDCis are more fragile but way better on fuel, for instance the later engines really need you to be on top of the oil changes and injector seals can be a problem.
As for living in one, no i wouldn't, i sleep in mine regularly but it's way too small to live in, whereas i can live in my transit ambulance, you can live "out" of a connect as in just sleep in it and store stuff but spending any time in one will drive you crazy and give you a bad back ! you may like it ? but as i say i'd be more worried about it's size rather than it's reliabilty compaired to other makes.

Note to self ..make new rule..anyone who mentions dwelling - don't answer.
hope the info i wrote is useful to someone .
A dweller could not or would not even check the oil or water, so total waste of space.

It’s not worth trying to work it out, the mods normally weed out this sort of crap but I think they’re short staffed at the moment and Luke is asleep.
