Re: Mystery vibration/growl driving straight and turning rig

I noticed that the sound lessened a bit whilst going over bumps and the weight on the wheels was changing. Jacked it up on the suspension arms, disconnected the ABS sensors and spun the wheels with the engine to try and hear where the vibration was coming from with suspension weighted... And there was no vibration. Wheel bearing after all? Is it possible to get a loud drone from a failing wheel bearing without seeing any noticeable play in the wheel when rocking by hand?

You can indeed get noisy wheel bearings without play on the wheel. Can I ask why you disconnected the ABS sensors before spinning the wheels? Just curious.

Thanks.

I disconnected the ABS sensors because on a previous try the ESP prevents the wheels from spinning. I guess the lack of road resistance is akin to being on ice.

I'll add that I was pretty intrepid about using the engine to spin the wheels whilst on axle stands... Could be hazardous.

Actually I don't doubt that this was a risky diagnosis method, so admins may want to delete that post in the interest of safety. I wish I had roller stands.

If you are going to change the wheel bearings make sure you put quality ones in there place like genuine ford ones or branded ..SKF , Timpken , FAG, NSK - or they will fail in less than 15,000 miles..note you need a hydraulic press to change these, plus adaptors to push them out and into the hub. walloping with a hammer may damage or shorten the life of them.
They usually break apart when pulling them out of the hubs leaving behind the inner bearing race on the stub axle, which you have to cut off with an angle grinder.

Pressing on the wrong surface when installing can also destroy them.

So not a DIY job unless you have the right tools.

regarding presses ..i bought a band new 30 tonne one off ebay about 10 years ago ..for £130 delivered - self assembly - good bit of kit.

Cant find any on there now for less than £650

all the best..mark

I have just re-read your post and realised (much to my dismay) that you actually ran the engine to spin the wheels whilst jacked up  My fault for reading a post after a 12 hour shift and then posting. I short read the post and stupidly presumed you had manually spun the wheels. Please don't ever do that again. Not only is this really dangerous, but can also cause huge damage to the gearbox and differential with there being zero load. Especially on the overrun.

Maybe take it to your local trusted garage and get them to do a diagnosis. :?:

On the other hand the 20 tonne presses are available at about £120 - £145 ish
One of the best purchases you can make (that's if you really want to do the job right)

if it takes too much room up ...re-sell it after you've used it. for about 80 percent you paid for it ..

It was the front right bearing after all. Replaced it with an SKF using a friend's hydraulic press.

Lessons:
The first, most obvious diagnosis could well be correct, and less stress than covering every possibility (I'm an overthinker, it seems).
A bearing can make a very loud droning noise despite exhibiting no play.
In this case, there was no clear signs of deterioration in the bearing internals.
Check and re-check that you ordered a bearing with the speed sensor strip, if that's what you need.

Glad you got it sorted, great that you had a friend with a press ., before i bought my press, I took hubs to a garage, i had to paid £50 to them, to press them out and press the new new ones in.
