gear selection issue

Postby trantorman » Tue Aug 24, 2021 5:19 pm

Hi

I have a 2010 T230 connect which is having gear selection issues.

It sometimes selects fine, then the next time it partly selects then jumps out of grates the gears.

I have had the selector tower off the top of the gear box and the pin is complete and its all free moving, so my next thing to try is replacing the shift cables, but I cant find any info on how to do that on a connect also how do you adjust them?

If that fails I guess it’s a replacement gear box or a rebuild, does anyone know and recommended suppliers?

Thanks

You sure all linkage gear is ok? Which gears are not staying in? It can be a selector or two that are just worn. Had it on an escort I had which had done 30,000 miles and second gear selector was worn, so wouldn't go into said gear. Was a fairly cheap fix. The guy used to hang his hand on the gearstick, which wore out the brass selector! Also, how many miles has this covered? If you are sold on the idea of replacing the box, I would seriously consider a good used unit as these boxes are not known for their faults. Also consider looking at the level of, and / or / replacing the gearbox oil :?: Gearbox rebuild by someone good would be costly :!: While I'm at it, it COULD also be a clutch problem :?

Thanks guys, cable's changed, struggled to get them adjusted, there does not appear to be much info out there for the t230 Connect, which has a different shifter, so it looks like its clutch or gearbox, 3rd is a mare to find and the others dont engage well.

So next step is find someone to rebuild my box, i don't fancy the secondhand route, I don't have time to take it all apart again if a 2nd hand box is faulty, i might try changing the lever assembly its done 160k so there is a bit of play in that, which might not be helping.

Common fault for Connect gearboxes from 2003-2013

Is the gear selector assembly bolted to top of gearbox. I direct replacement can be found on a Focus mk1.

Or you can fit a focus mk1 gearbox. It's a straight swap with better gear ratio. 8)
