TDCI no start after belt change

Postby Smokedog » Sun Sep 12, 2021 10:18 am

Hi looking for opinions as have completed a timing belt and tensioner change using locking tools for crank and camshaft also marking etc and loosening and torqueing the camshaft sprocket.

Got fuel in it, been in for a year and van has not been used. Cranking well and starting for a second on easy start but dying again straightaway.

Not starting now. Not sure if I've put the electrical connectors on wrong or forgotten something so uploaded a pic of timing belt and top view of sensors any pointers appreciated

Well, I'm not well up on anything regarding tdci, but put in the same situation i would look at :
1. There is a dodgy bit of wiring hanging out of one of the red connectors.
2. Because of the length of time without a start up .. I would pull every electrical connector off in turn and douse them with this stuff: (ebay item https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/283919959241 if link does not work)

Even if it does not fix your problem this spray will keep your connectors in top condition for the future and can be looked at a service item

This is a cheap way to start off ...after that it becomes more time consuming..and more expensive ..so start cheap first

Next you are looking at the fuel system ..changing the filter and looking for leaks - Note a common fault: fuel line perforation where it passes over the subframe/ cross-member below engine.... rubs on cross member causes hole that lets air into the fuel line.

all the best.mark

Haha got it started cant believe it. Just seen your response now and was thinking along the same thought process, thank you for checking it over . Checked timing one last time and turned over by hand fine. Checked all connectors were tight then pulled the centre pipe off the fuel filter and heard a hiss so air definately in system. Little bit redex into filter and pipe back on.

No luck first attempt but second attempt roared into life, she lives!

Probably just needed priming as these don't have a fuel pump. Can be an absolute arse to start if the fuel system is dry. The starting spray would have helped suck some fuel in. Should have put a new fuel filter in while you were at it (filling with diesel beforehand) Hindsight is a wonderful thing though  glad you got it started though mate :D 8)
