Just collected my van from the workshop.

£656.41 for new parts fitted to a £500 s/h engine, plus £700 labour. I was most impressed with the tidiness and cleanliness of the guy's workshop, not sure if I am allowed to post his name/address/phone number, but these are available by PM if any other Norwich area owners need this kind of help.

Thanks to all for your advice, sympathy and help.

Glad you have it sorted in the end, and hope that you're happy with the new engine 8)

It does sound like a lot, but to be fair, it cost me half of that just for a new clutch in my Mk3 Focus, so It's in keeping for modern times :) I hope that it proves to be more reliable in future :D

I've now put about 500 miles on this engine, checked the dipstick this morning and the oil is still looking clean, not clean like a petrol engine, but clean for a derv.!

Also needed a new battery, the old one appeared to have died whilst awaiting recovery, mounted the one from my elderly BMW E30 that had been kept on a CTEC trickle charger and the improved voltage level maintained has also eliminated the annoying habit of the driver's door failing to lock!

The Spanish Traffic Police managed to knock off the n/s rear bumper cap with their motor bikes whilst getting me to a safer place than the live lane on a viaduct with no hard shoulder, Bought a replacement for a fiver that broke it's mounting clips when I attempted to fit it....careful examination of the old one revealed it was just missing a yellow spire type clip that the new one came with, swapped the clip over and the old cap slipped straight on!

As a proper sucker for punishment, I am booked on the ferry out of Newhaven on the 18th Feb.,for my next trip to the Algarve.....

Best pour hot water on these clips when fitting in cold weather or they break.

Haven't used these guys personally but hear good things about them. Obviously too late now as I see you've had it fixed!

Yes!

I emailed them and they failed to reply offering a quote to transport my van to them....

The guy I used was local to me and was able to collect the van on his beaverback at no extra cost. I would have prefered a rebuilt engine with a warranty, but the suppliers of these could not deliver for at least a month, Christmas...innit...so settled for my option.

It's still running well, went to it this morning after it standing for several days and it started promptly and ran properly, so I am sure that my next trip to Portugal will be a good 'un, but yes, I will start a new thread when I am sat in the queue at Newhaven, so all laughter and 'I told you so' can be recorded!
