There's no lift pump on these, the fuel is drawn through the filter by the injection pump, but it will struggle if the filter is full of air. Try filling the filter with diesel, refitting and trying again, but it may take two or three fills to purge the air, and get it to fire.
Your battery also needs to be strong and fully charged when cranking, as the pump EDU won't energise if the cranking voltage is too low. Jump starting from a running vehicle may help when you're doing this

As previously mentiŕoned there is no lift pump. If possible fill the tank as much as you can. Also Jack up the back end as far you can on axle stands. This raises the effective head of the diesel. (quote][/quote]

thats it working.i decided to change the fuel filter as well as it looked quite old.filled the new filter with diesel and cranked the van over loads of times as it wouldnt start.
what i had read was to crank for no more than 10 seconds at a time and wait 30 seconds for the starter to cool.as this wasnt working for me i decided to just go for it and cranked for about 16 seconds and the van made a sound as if it was going to start i then gave it 10 minutes and tried again after about another 16 seconds it fired up.at last up and running again and forscan showed no codes.thanks again Altransit for the help i was nearly taking out the fuel tank looking for a pump :D
