fuel filter - connect

Postby metalworker0 » Tue Oct 11, 2022 12:06 pm

2006 connect tddi. buying fuel filter

First, I went to ford dealership, who said it was £38 and they did not have one ..I'd have to order it and come back

Went strait after, to price up a fuel filter at europarts, gave them my registration number ..they looked it up , then said you must get the number off your old fuel filter ..before we can proceed and give you the right one...it was hammering it down with rain ..so passed on that one.

So, I'm looking at ebay ...now don't know if I'm looking for the right one or not as europarts have put doubts into my mind ..that if i bought one off ebay it may be the wrong one ..as it looks like to me that there are different versions ..

So, any advice much appreciated

Now as you know I've had petrol engines all my life so not very knowledgeable about a few aspects of diesels

Draining water from the diesel filters, via the tap on the bottom ...do I need engine running to do this .......could I become unstuck in anyway ...like introducing air into the system.

Generally - What's good practice ...should i only do this if I suspect water in the system ,...or should i do it regularly like every month or 1000 miles.

all the best...mark

It appears you need Ford part no 1480561.

If you follow this link there are a lot of cross references ;)

Thanks matt -Done - bought two genuine Delphi marked with ford oval off ebay on best offer...offered £10 each ..and accepted.

So ok now for couple of years

Now the other questions

Draining water from the diesel filters, via the tap on the bottom ...do I need engine running to do this .......could I become unstuck in anyway ...like introducing air into the system.
Generally - What's good practice:
1. Should i only do this if I suspect water in the system
2. Or should i do it regularly like every month or 1000 miles.
3. Do you get more water in the filters in the summer or winter

Water drain best done with engine off just to be sure of not sucking in air. As for how frequently, do it as often as you like, but usually (unless water gets into the tank) there will be no water, or very little water coming out so it only needs checking every now and then.

Thanks for the answer

I was thinking, condensation water, that's why i mentioned winter/ summer.
connect sucks diesel from the tank ,...no pump in the tank ..so yes it would suck in air mmmm?????..i think ..dont know as there are 3 pipes going to the filter ..not sure what's going on with three pipes.

and I'm not sure what happens when you drain the filter for too long ....which is why i asked should the engine be running.

and if i was to design a diesel water drain syystem ..it would have a large settlement chamber were you could get rid of both water and dirt ..and then give the filter less to do ..so not having to worry about replacing it so often.

you only need to open it briefly until diesel dribbles out, too long and you will empty the filter and may draw air into the pump when you try and start, and I think condensation in winter was more of a problem years ago with metal tanks than with modern plastic tanks.

Chug is correct, water is heavier than diesel and will sit in the bottom of the filter.

Well, looks to me, there will not be a large amount of space in there to hold water ..the drain must be for emergencies when Youd drain several times over a period of minutes to get rid of it.

It could "in theory" be full of water. Since water is heavier than fuel, it will also sit in the bottom of the tank and will be the first thing "sucked up" by the pump. As Chug mentioned....the old steel tanks were known for this as they tended to get a lot of condensation in cooler climiates, especially if the tank was near empty....not so much these days with the plastic fuel tanks.

Is your connect a tddi or a tdci?

I don’t bother draining water from my fuel filter I just change the filter every 6k miles.
