2004 1.8 75bhp won't start

Postby Nkdavies » Sat Sep 09, 2023 10:17 am

Jump in van turned ignition on and immobiliser light stayed on. Van will crank, but not fire. Code 23, arranged a guy to come with diagnostic equipment. Kept trying the van everyday while waiting, after a couple of days the immobiliser light went off and the van fired up and ran fine. Turned off engine about 10 mins later and van would crank but not fire again with no immobiliser fault. Diagnostic guy turned up a few days later and still wouldn't start, said it was possibly the fuel pump. Decided to get the aa out and check then tow me to a garage. When they turned up the next morning the immobiliser fault was back, aa guy was a waste of time and couldn't be bothered and I decided against taking it to the garage. Couple of days later tried the van, immobiliser light went off, van started, stopped engine, wouldn't restart again, no immobiliser fault.
After loads of googling and watching YouTube I thought it might be the fuel pump edu needed repairing. Checked for voltage across pin 6&7 with plug removed and nothing. Traced cables back to underneath fusebox and checked again by there and 0volts again. Checked all fuses, swapped relays around and still 0volts. With the plug connected im getting 2.4v across pin 7&8. Is there anything else you guys can recommend checking?

Sorry Mark, but the key fob battery has nothing to do with the immobiliser, it simply powers the remote buttons for the C/L.

Code 23 is a fault with the pump EDU or the wiring to it :)

So what voltages should I be getting at the pump plug?

van update

Sent pump edc off for checking and repair. no fault found, but guy changed parts that normally fail(at my request). refitted edc, bled all the air out at injectors. cranked van over but still wouldn't fire.
Checked with forscan for dtc codes and these came up.
U0406 - Invalid Data Received from FICM.
P1664 - FIP malfunction
P1563 - FIP requesting engine stop
P0216 - Injection timing control circuit
Tried to clear but they came back. managed to get it running while spraying easy start into air intake, but stop straight away.
Then after about 10 minutes of trying the van started fine and ran ok. battery light stayed on the dash, cleared all the codes whilst running and it gave me a new code
P0622 - Charging system fault.
Checked the voltage at battery and it was showing just under 14v while engine running.

Turned van off, then it wouldn't restart and gave the same 4 error codes.
Is the alternator overcharging/faulty?
Is the alternator supposed to give a signal to something which lets the van start?
I'm only getting 12v to pins 6&7 at fuel pump while cranking momentarily
All fuses, relays and wiring checked from fuse box to fuel pump plug.

Any help would be appreciated

Well it can show the voltage at 14v ..but if there are things like corroded battery posts , ...then all the simple things need to be looked at first, earths, and the electrical connections on the alternator ..often when you get multiple of fault codes bearing no relation to each other its the main electrical circuits that are to blame ...
You also want to have your battery tested ...a faulty battery ..calls down, at the end of its life etc ..will not charge or keep the modern cars electronic systems operational.

Van update

Slight progression, but still not running. When I originally checked fuses and relays, I checked with the relays removed to see if the coil side was switching and it was. What I found while testing with relays in place was relay k219 injection pump power was losing its ground switching from pcm after 2 seconds. It does this with or without the fuel pump connected. If I remove the relay I get ground switching from pcm again. So when the weather permits I'm gonna recheck the wires from fuel pump for damage/shorts. Any other ideas on what to check guys? Could something else be causing this?

Check the fuel pump wires carefully. They can look OK at a glance, but can be corroded or broken inside the plastic covering causing intermittent or permanent pump codes.

One of the things with the TDDI is that the module that sits on top of the pump can fail - this is one of the few TDDI's common failings, so i hear.

There is a repair service that costs £69

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/283320717698?

I'm not promoting this service ..you'll have to do your own research ..or maybe someone here can vouch for them.

now i think the charging fault is a completely separate thing and not related ...forget about that for now.

sorry must have missed that bit ..i don't know how to check an edu, it's beyond my capabilities. .and probably 99.999 percent of every member here .

There are a few wizards here ..but don't think they wonder into the connect bit of the forum
