Headlight headache....help!

Hi everyone, hope the collective brains here can help me as it's doing my head in!

I have a headlight issue that's got me beat and Mr MOT depends on it...I'll try to explain simply...

Side lights all good all the time.

Headlights all good some of the time.

Turn on main beam permanently and headlights go out both sides with only NS main beam staying lit

Hold main beam on / flash (don't click it on permanently ) and headlights stay on but only NS main works

In a nutshell...OS main never comes on and clicking it on full time turn off dipped heads lights both sides but leaves on side and NS main.

Duff earth somewhere?

Dodgy relay?

New arm?

How do I go about even diagnosing something like this? Love my Connect
but can't afford to throw money at it that I don't have...it's not worth much and got other bits to weld / fix too...


Any electrical whizzes here with any pointers...grateful for any help...

To keep it simple..i would start looking at the bulbs and connections at the back of the headlight

Think the bulbs have two filaments in them ..you can usually visually inspect these to see if the two are intact

You could do things like swap bulbs from one side to the other.

when non of that works ..you then move onto relays ..but i think if it was a relay..it would be doing it on both.

sometimes a short can play silly tricks

..Get someone at the back of the van to tell you whats going on with the rear lights. as all this is happening.

all that applies to mk1 only ..if mk2 or later ..then its much more complicated and over my head

I'm slightly confused; is it not normal for the dipped beam to go off when selecting full time main beams

O/S main beam not working is possibly just the bulb, or a bad connector on the bulb holder
