Ford connect 2012 air recirculation button light

Hi just wondering if anyone knows how the air recirculation indicator light which tells you if its on or not works.

The door opens and closes on the button press but the indicator light does not come on. Ive tried replacing the button but that did not work.

Any ideas on how the light "knows" when to be off or on
