2018 Transit Connect 1.5 Duratorq

Postby Sanmendez » Thu Sep 26, 2024 9:31 am

Hi all,

Can anyone confirm 100% if this thing has a wet timing belt or not? It's not the Eco Blue engine, it's a Duratorq diesel

Thank you :D

1.5 EcoBlue (diesel) is a Dry timing belt with direct drive oil pump

There are two versions 8 valve and 16 valve and two capacities 1.5 and 1.6
It is a Peugeot Citroen and ford collaboration designed engine. is also fitted in those other makes of vehicles

The 16 valve version of this engine has a small cam chain linking the two camshafts ..that can be problematic and needs changing often.

it has never been made clear (to me) if the 16 valve version is fitted in the transit connect.

it is strongly adviced that you change the pulley wheels (that's the static pulley wheel and tensioner pulley wheel) and the water pump at the same time.

Hi metalworker,

Thank you for the response. I remain unsure - it’s not the eco blue. It’s the duratorq 1.5.

well rest assured its dry belt driven

The only thing I'm not sure about is 8 valve or 16 valve ..both are dry belt driven ..but the 16 valve has a chain at the top of the engine driving the second cam shaft.

Ford never mention in sales literature about how many valves present ..they state PS horse power and that is it ..i cant become knowledgeable on this ..having not owned a van with such an engine and trying following misleading spec information from ford.

8 valve or 16 ..if i was close up to the engine ..experience will tell me, that i would be able to tell just by the shape of the rocker cover .. net pictures reveal no secrets here as most show a big plastic cover fitted that covers the whole lot up.

best i can do i'm afraid

Hi Mark,

Thank you for your detailed responses - very much appreciated. I'm gonna buy the van second hand. Do you reckon this is the right video for timing belt replacement on it? Looks ok, I'll probably have a crack myself.

seems strait forward

what he never mentioned in detail
1. Engine has to be supported from underneath before you remove the engine mount. block of wood on a trolley jack, or if you are going to be a while, stick axle stand under .
---------------------------------------------------------------------
2. Crankshaft bolt can be very tight, it has loctite on it
take note of this video from 10 mins in...its a 2l mondeo ..but you are going through the same set of problems.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toKv2yUoU6Y

crankshaft pulley has to be looked at to determine if it is worn out ...meaning that it has a rubber insulator / torsional vibration damper, a common fault, this rubber likes to crack ..and the consequences can leave you stranded when the pulley falls off...so examine for cracks .

putting bolt back - There will be a torque sequence for this bolt

------------------------------------------------------------------
3. engine mount bolts are into aluminium. careful !
..the nut may come out with a stud attached to it

They are maybe 15mm and make sure you use a hexagon 6 sided socket on them ..under no circumstances should you use a bi-hexagon 12 sided socket unless they are 12 sided nuts and bolts

Use 6 sided sockets ..never 12 sided on any bolt that requires them
Clean the dirt and grime off the pulleys before fitting new belt.

Stop whilst water pump is off ..as it is a - VERY GOOD TIME TO DO A COMPLETE COOLANT FLUSH--
when the whole job finished, replace with the latest P-oat 10 year antfreeeze

Recommended.

Use a Ford timing belt
or
"DAYCO" - "High Tenacity" timing belt
