mk1 manual, iffy reverse light switch engagement

Postby 08SWB-connectOwner » Thu Oct 03, 2024 10:34 pm

How do you do, fellow connectists?
ehm.. sorry.

I just noticed that my reverse light doesn't stay on when I shift into reverse, unless I hold the stick a bit further back.
If I let go of the stick, the light goes out.
This is not likely to be caused by the reverse light switch on the gearbox, since that is only a few months old and OE quality.
The problem to me is clearly about the switch not getting pushed enough, since holding the stick further back prevents the issue.

(I originally replaced the switch, because the reverse light was not getting lit at all)

Is there anything I could do, without taking the gearbox apart?

(the switch has been tightened down enough, trust me. I don't want to bust the threads on the gearbox and it felt like the threads bottomed out when I installed the new switch anyway)

Thanks :)

i would be looking at the side of the gear stick lower mechanicals, that can be accessed by removing gearshift gator/boot
but if you've already been there ...well, umm, i'd then be looking at the engine and gearbox mounts particularly the dog bone one from engine to bulkhead, any movement in these would not help with gear selection ..but may rear its head as showing on the switch first.

well its not quite dog bone looking...i was thinking of my last car ..its called the rear gearbox mount

all the best.mark
