Transmission Limited Function

Postby CLOVERLEAF159 » Fri Nov 22, 2024 5:43 pm

hi guys , 3 months into ownership of a 2017 Grand Tourneo Powershift with the 1.5 tdci engine and I have the following " Transmission Limited Function" appear on the dash. As soon as you take it out of Park, the orange warning light and message disappear. the Tourneo drives normally and sport mode works too? Gear changes are fine. Could it be a low battery ? I did try a battery reset by disconnecting for 15 mins but message still appears. Any ideas?

google says

A "Transmission Limited Function" on a Ford vehicle's dashboard could be caused by a number of issues, including: Worn or damaged components, Low or contaminated transmission fluid, and Clutch failure.
Other reasons for transmission issues include:
Malfunctioning engine control module
Bad internal connections
Worn-out sensors
Faulty solenoids
Transmission overload, which can be caused by sudden acceleration, driving up steep hills, or driving with a full vehicle
If you own a Ford Powershift vehicle, you may experience problems with shuddering, slipping, or rough shifting. The clutches in these gearboxes can wear down faster than expected, causing them to fail. However, a well-maintained Powershift gearbox can last for several years and thousands of miles.

so start with the cheapest and easiest first

check fluid level, this could be especially relevant if you park on a slope ..its giving you and early warning

To check the transmission fluid level
to do that - refer to owners manual
- i did look, but too much conflicting stuff on google

Thanks Mark for Posting that up and will also be good for others .. I will start with checking the fluid/oil then .... Its interesting actually that in the service records, it had a gearbox service every year apart from last year too .

I did see something about transmission oil and transmission filter change at 30,000 miles whilst i was looking.

You have now in USA a new method called fluid exchange

Well just an update. I actually did a battery reset which didn't work, but now all of sudden, the message has disappeared. I will still check the levels when I get a chance.

Interesting about the 30,000 miles service change as now up to nearly 50,000 and 7 and a half years old

So an update, also fitted a new Battery as the old one was going bad for sure and no Transmission fault lights Still. So think it was a battery issue in the first place especially as when i checked the old battery was not the right specification and was actually not clamped down due to its small size. Whoever changed it last put in whatever they had I think.

Yes, battery, earths, connections and charging system can be responsible for a lot of reports of malfunctioning sensors etc,, system needs a good voltage or the PCM and other modules malfunction and mis-diagnose things and then you get fault codes.
