1.8 TDDI faulty turbo?

Postby E30325iSport » Sat Dec 29, 2007 11:48 pm

Hi all, newbie here! :D

I have just purchased an '03 1.8 TDDI Transit Connect with 26k. It drives great but I'm not sure if the turbo is working properly... :? All i can hear is VERY quiet 'whooosh' when I let off the gas, mainly around 3k rpm when the revs drop - is this normal? Are the turbos unusually quiet like this or does it sound faulty?

Another thing i notice is that if i press the gas pedal in slightly and hold it still, the engine will increase in rpm on its own - Does this sound like the turbo is working correctly as i am really finding it hard to pick out the turbo's turbine noise over the engine.

Thanks

The easy way to tell if the turbo is working is to loosen 1 of the jubilee clips around the intercooler pipes (the flexi ones) rev it up and see if it blows the pipe off.
The Tddi 75ps version isnt exactly a speed machine and the turbo doesnt really kick in that well, so I would guess yours is probably normal :?

As for the throttle pedal, does it do this when driving or when stationary?

Thanks for the reply coconut,

It only revs up whilst stationary, which makes me think that the turbo is working properly (no load + turbo = rise in rpm as such), I just cannot hear the bloody thing! All I can hear is a very subtle electrical sounding 'whoosh' noise which gets drowned out by the engine noise most of the time and other times i can pick it out (mainly straight after the engine hits idle). Which jubille clip shall i undo? If i look at the intercooler from the front of the car where abouts is it?

If the turbo was knackered would it bring up any engine management problems or warning signs on the dash? I have none of these and the van is a dream to drive, i just realised today that i don't have the 'usual' turbo diesel engine sound track.

Another couple of small issues, I need to source a replacement case for my 3 button remote central locking keyfob, the internals are fine, its just that the keyring has parted company with the case

Also I have solid rear doors and i cannot see a thing from behind me and it is a pitta getting on and off the drive. Could do with sourcing a pair of red rear doors with glass instead. Havn't got a clue where to look, this is my first van

Thanks :D

If it only revs up when stationary, then its perfectly normal, the throttle pedal on needs a very slight movement and the revsincrease alot as there is no load on the engine

As you look at the intercooler there is 2 flexi pipes that join it to the solid pipes that run over the engine, if you loosen off either of the clips on the solid pipe end (rather than the intercooler end) give the flexi pipe a twist (so it moves on the pipe and isnt stuck) then rev the engine briefly to 5000rpm, it should blow the pipe off with the boost pressure :D
Even if the turbo was knackered, it wouldnt necessarily bring on the EML.
And just remember, the engine set-up is basically a Focus, so luckily, there wont be to much engine noise coming into the cab :D

The key fob, yep really common  , various different ways of fixing them, the best ive seen is to get some metal in a egg shape, drill a hole in it (to go on the keyring) then stick the broken fob to it :D , another way is to drill through the whole casing (check inside to make sure you dont drill the circuit board!!).
But I dont expect you would find just a casing for it, just as easy to get another remote and program it to the van.(simple job, do it yourself  ) Remotes are about £40 from ford, so I would try ebay (heres a item number for a remote on there, https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200188159758, but the 3 button transit and connect ones are the same so there is plenty to choose from  )

The rear doors, keep an eye out on ebay (ive looked but none at the mo!) or try and find a commercial breakers, if your a bit handy with a saw, you could cut the panels out of your doors then get the glass panels and bond them in  , but finding a pair of doors would be easier :D :D

Hope this helps :D :D

Whoooo its working, if i hold the rpm @ about 4k for a sec and then rev it i can hear the turbo suck in! I think its just down to it being a tiny little quiet thing!

Cheers for the help Coconut 8)
