Wheel stud replacement 2018

Postby Sanmendez » Sun Nov 24, 2024 3:10 pm

Hi all,

Recently bought a 2018 1.5 connect.

Previous owner had misplaced the security wheel nut key, and had snapped the head off one of the security wheel nuts trying to remove it.

So I managed to remove the 3 good security nuts with a lug removal tool.

The 4th snapped bolt (front axle) - there was no option other than to drill the stud out, which I did.

Got a replacement wheel stud, removed wheel, brake, disc.

No way to replace the stud without either

1. dismantling the hub (new bearing I guess?). Not a job I am prepared to do at home.
2. Grinding a nook out of the hub to create space to get the old stud out / new lug in. Not sure about this. Don’t want to critically weaken the hub for obvious reasons.
3. Giving up and running 4/5 nuts
4. Your advice here….

What should I do?

TIA

This thread here..think they are the same as focus

He did not want to disturb the wheel bearing either and ground a bit off the hub

IF you are walloping the stud out ..not recommended, the ideal method is an air hammer..failing that ..you are going to have to support it so no wallops go into and transfer into the wheel bearing...which would cause damage called brineling.

https://www.linearmotiontips.com/how-be ... rinelling/

suggest thick cold chisel wedged behind the hub to stop transfer of blows and avoid bearing damage or hub distorting.

if removing wheel bearing ideally the whole hub should be taken off and then you need a press.
..but you can get DIY kits that pull the hub out with threaded mandrels etc ..£40 - £60 then with both methods, the wheel bearing is destroyed taking it off , and you need a new bearing.

Hi Mark,

Thanks again for your speedy and informative responses.

The 'grinding a nook option' looks to be taking pole position there!

As long as it doesn't critically weaken the hub....why the hell not?

Thanks, and all the best
