Weird electrical problem - anyone had this?

Postby aneng » Sat Dec 28, 2024 6:17 pm

2003 Connect 1.8 TDDi Duratorq. Wife went to start the van yesterday - battery flat. I charged it up overnight. Went to start it today... No interior lights, no glow plug light, no alternator light, no instrument cluster lighting, no speedo function. It started and ran ok though. All fuses (engine bay and glovebox) tested ok.

I've stripped the instrument cluster and cleaned it all off with alcohol and it's drying on a radiator now.

Anyone else had weird stuff like this? Also, does anyone know where I can get a wiring diagram please?

Concerning connect mk1 - faults were due them being built with weak soldered joints done with Lead-free solder.
The cure was to send the whole instrument cluster to a specialist company for repair.

Of the many things it could be: there have been issues with the clocks , internal; circuits and soldered joints ...sometimes a thump on the dash above would prove that this is the issue ..as the clocks would then flicker or come on .

Well this is only one, of many choices, and that is : you have is to take out the cluster and send it to:

https://www.ecutesting.com/
(please read the website on how they operate this service, i believe they will send you a box to put it in .)

This is one of many companies that perform this service ...the above one, as far as i can make out, from feedback here on this forum, is one of the trusted ones.

Total cost will be in the region of £70. (check the websites prices)

Hope this helps.

Thanks for that. I'm pretty good with electronics so I pulled the instrument cluster out, cleaned it up, resoldered the multi-pin sockets and a few other components where the solder looked iffy. Getting the needles off the gauges was a pain - I used two teaspoons in the end, but unfortunately whilst all the other needles came off the shaft, the speedo one came out with the shaft attached - i.e. it pulled it out of the actuator. I reassembled it and everything works now, interior light, warning lights etc - except for the bloody speedo !

I don't suppose anyone's got a knackered instrument cluster from a Mk1 have they so I can take the speedo actuator off it have they ?
