2018 Tourneo Connect 1.5 Snapped Cambelt

Postby devilhunter » Fri Feb 07, 2025 11:47 pm

Hi guys,
I have a 2018 Tourneo Journey Connect 1.5 TDCI with 100k miles which has I believe just snapped its cambelt at 50mph, as diagnosed by the AA man (turning the engine over does not move the top belt pulley). There was no warning, no funny noise or smoke, it just died.
My question is simple - what would the likely damage be ?
Would a top end rebuild / repair (quoted around £1600) be an option or is the damage likely to be more terminal and require a complete rebuild or would a replacement engine be the way forward ?
I am located in the Maidstone / Medway area if you guys have any recommendations.

Thanking you all in advance during this very stressful time.

According to this nice Filipino chap ..this engine can have other problems especially after 100,000.

watch the video...watch to end to see difficulties encountered - not about cambelts but other problems ..that could be happening to your bottom end .

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvT8QYrg2pI&t=821s

value ..according to sold items on ebay - your van if working, would be £4000 - £5000

Mostly vans of this value with major work needed, are not worth fixing, if you have to pay someone else to do it, you leaving until 100,000 without cambelt replacement says it has not been looked after as well as it could have been. well not enthusiastically, but done to fords recommended change interval stuff ..which i think is a bit far off.
Going by fords service scheduled is guaranteed to wear your engine out sooner.
if you've done things like fords recommended 18,000 mile oil changes, then all will not be well as regards wear and tear on other parts of engine. it will be not worth spending money on having the top done when the bottom is not so good.

It's always risky buying a replacement USED engine ....but if that engine had better maintenance than yours, a decent mechanic can tell that ..black sludge etc .
Engine can be had for £1000 upwards on ebay

You'll have to work out the pros and cons.

Thought I would come back with an update. The engine is / was truly toast and with 100k on it, I decided to cut my losses and have sold the whole vehicle after nearly 7 years of ownership.
I cant honestly say I will miss it. Adios.....
