Problem after timing belt change.

Postby Dansmith67 » Sun Mar 16, 2025 6:22 pm

About 5 months ago I bought a 2018 Connect from a workmate/good friend after the timing belt apparently snapped (according to the garage that towed him off) they really put the frighteners on him about the engine so he decided he'd scrap it but i stepped in and I said without looking at it that id give him a lot more money for it than scrap to help him with a deposit for another van. Anyway I gave the van to my brother to fix so he could use it for work after hed got it going but when my brother took a look at it he saw that the belt hadn't snapped it was a faulty tensioner that caused the belt to jump and thus caused 3 valves to break their rocker arms in the process.

Ok was looking good for a relatively quick fix. Waited till weather got warmer to even look at it again. Got a new belt kit and replaced it, replaced the broken rocker arm and set up the timing correctly lining up with pins, put the other parts back on that the garage had taken off i.e. throttle body, casing etc and put it all back together also changed the fuel filter. Ok it starts first turn but runs very rough on idle and white smoke diesel vapour from the exhaust when the engine warms, dab the accelerator and hold it and the engine runs smooth but still smokes, no engine management light and no errors checked and double checked everything he can think off and cant diagnose the problem. Try to drive it and there's a loss of power then picks up quick but big cloud of vapour out of exhaust then goes back to loss of power, also goes through fuel like nobody's business so there's definitely a lot fuel coming out of the exhaust and really smells of it as well. Cant understand what the problem is, can anybody help, please, trying to do this in the little time between work and don't have the funds to put it into a garage right now. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

f it’s lost timing enough to do damage, the cam lobes are a pressed fit onto cam,it may have spun them.
If you lift air filter lid up with engine running can you hear or feel it ‘popping’ or thumping back in inlet pipe ?

Ok,
So I think next I’d be either compression testing it to rule base engine out.

Or,given the smoking and fuel use symptoms, get injectors checked / tested…..
