2004 connect wipers not working correctly

Postby Timan99 » Mon Mar 17, 2025 11:10 pm

Hi Everyone,

Just wondered if you could help, Im trying to help a friend who bought my 2004 connect off me!

The wiper motor was very weak and only worked on high speed and even that was quite slow, So we decided the motor was shot and he bought a 2nd hand one from a breaker, We fitted that but have a few issues, both speeds work fine but the wipers wont park correctly, they stop in a different place everytime. Intermittent wipers dont work at all, If you choose intermittent they just jerk briefly and move about an inch and then just stop. The wipers are fitted correctly and they work fine when turned on, they just dont park.

Do you think this is an issue with the motor?

As they wernt working properly before the motor change i wondered if there was a problem anyway?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and time :)

Never been inside the motor and gearbox of one of these ..suggest mix and match/ swap parts between old motor and new one ..i think .you're looking at a micro switch or set of contact points inside the gearbox , that sets the park position //maybe there is adjustment ..maybe its not working ..or maybe i don't know.

you cannot do this with different makes of motor. they all say ford, but are made by different companies for ford, ..if you know what i mean.

btw ...the wipers must in in the park position before installation of the wiper arms...so run without arms ..let stop in park position before arms go back on

all the best.mark

Thanks Mark,

So you definatley think its the motor? My understanding of wiper motors is the same as yours so im presuming its a dodgy breaker yard motor but just wanted to rule out the switch or relay before we buy another

Yes, we did run the motor without the wipers :D

well the old one works ..but slowly ..that could be a number of things like how well lubed the spindles are for each wiper arm ..if the gearbox grease is still lubing ..could be dried up and gone solid, that's what old grease does. brushes get stuck in the holders or wear out.

... only applicable if both identical, i was saying make one good wiper motor out of the two

sorry cant find any info on who makes them etc

here's a 1970s lucas ..may be very different or very similar to the principles of operation, you may learn something from it, not wasted ..as anyone here with mk1 mk2 and mk3 transit, not connect.. for them it would be very useful.

Thanks Mark, Interesting info!

The breaker yard motor was slightly different and its a daily driver so dont want to risk leaving him without any wipers, hes bought a new old stock genuine ford one off ebay and fitting this weekend so i'll let everyone know how it works out.

Thanks again for your input :D
