Transit Connect 2018 ZTGA 1.5 Ecoblue Timing Chain Tensioner

Postby Kvarant » Tue Apr 01, 2025 5:23 pm

Hi,

I suspected the timing chain had jumped after the van became hard to start but the chain is lining up with the arrows on the cams.
Only thing I noticed was there is no chain glide guide under the top part of the tensioner, I' don't know if there should be one but in every car part store online there is a picture of the tensioner with a chain guide on both sides.

There is no sign that it has broken off or anything. This is from factory, nobody before me has done anything with this engine.

Does anyone know if there should be a guide at the top?
Please see pictures.

Thanks,

Is that the engine with 16 valves ..a rubber cambelt and a short chain at the top joining the two camshafts.
IF SO - No one has come here in the last couple of years saying they owned one of these yet ..was beginning to think they did not exist in the connect.

Unfortunately i only have this information via Alan Howatt on his videos about 2.0l mondeos ..but im sure its the same set up

See here, full explanation what wears out and what needs replacing at 14:40 into the video.
here you'll see the the chain Guide as you call it ...has worn away and gone missing.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jLzRoDQdyo

he has other videos as well on the same job ..some in worse condition .
sorry i cant offer more info only guesses ..as like i said, these rare in the connect ..even rarer for someone to come here with a problem with one.

if you're still struggling for answers visit the "passion for ford" forum where they are very commonly fitted to fiestas and focuses .

Hi,

Yes it has 16 valves and a rubber timing belt & a timing chain holding the two cams together.
He calls it a nylon guide, how on earth can those disappear inside a closed engine rocker cover?
Amazingly bad engineering work I must admit!

So I guess there should be a yellow nylon guide on top also.
Geezes, luckily the chain and cams are still in correct timing despite missing the guide.

Thanks for the answer and video link

Is this a different engine than yours or has he taken it apart in a different way, not separating the two cam carrier halves .
