Starter Motor Replacement Issue

Postby Wastelandcrafts » Sun Jul 13, 2025 3:44 am

Hi folks, was doing my mate a favour and changing his starter motor for him on his 2011 1.8tdci transit connect. All was going well, got the bolts loose no problem on the starter mount, went to loosen off the power connector nuts and got the two 12mm ones loose nice and easy, got to the 10mm and the starter motor housing shattered as I went to turn the nut. That left us with the issue of how am I removing the nut, and after a couple attempts of removing while it was still on the starter, it was clear it wasn't coming loose. Decided the only solution left was cut the nut with the Dremel. All was going well, was about half way through, and disaster struck, the connector plate from the loom snapped and now we can't connect the 10mm post of the starter.

Question is, are we now having to replace the looms from positive and negative, or is there a way to do it without having to completely replace the looms? The plastic housing isn't in great shape, it took a bit of a beating while I was trying to get the connector free, but it should still be usable and keep everything covered.

Pics of the current situation are attached.

Also, side note, is there meant to be a connector on all three posts? I don't remember any connectors on the upper left as you look at it, and the plastic housing only appears to have to upper right and the lower (10mm) connectors.

i cant actually see what is damaged as picture is out of focus.

you probably need a new crimp on connector for the wire

note; they come in all sorts of sizes and searching 10mm on ebay (example 10mm crimp connector)will have it coming up with the gauge of the wire and not the hole size.

so it up to you to wade through the results and make a decision.

The ratchet crimp tools also come with different jaw sizes and most DO NOT PERFORM A GOOD JOB, usually jaws too short ..cheap Chinese copies that don't crimp the whole ferule

The only make i recommend is the "SWA" brand . beware of all of these tools unless branded SWA

all the best.mark
