Wheel Stud Replacement

Hi Everyone!
I promise I used the search but couldn't quite find my answer...
I'm going to put some alloy wheels on my 1st gen Connect.
I've got some longer studs because the alloys are thicker.
My question is, can I swap them all out without disassembling the suspension? I'm particularly concerned with the front end. Is there room to do the swap without disassembling the hub/cv/strut/wishbone/what-have-you?

FRONT
never having done it myself .. just looking at it = making observations
as you can see .. in one of my pics here ( when i was doing the bottom ball joints).. the studs will not come out without removing the hub from the wheel bearing THAT MEANS DESTROYING THE WHEEL BEARING, and then installing a new one after you've done the studs - pic makes studs look damaged .. they are not .. its just blurred

. never really looked at whats involved .. will be different .. it wiil according to if its disc or drum you have

but the front stops you dead in your tracks


what i did

i bought wheel nuts that have thread going all the way to the end as fords dont ..

note though - these ebay ones i bought went rusty within twelve months finish on them isnt chrome, its polished nickel plating

close up of threads ... you can get about maybe 6 threads on my ford alloy focus wheel with original studs using these nuts

You will get maybe 3 threads with the ford ones... last owner numbskull... thats what he did ... some of them came loose on their own

Other than that you are destroying and replacing wheel bearings .. good luck

my personnel opinion is: i don't like lowering .. others do, but not me, not with the speed bumps around here ! note my ford focus alloy wheels may be different to what you buy . so only works as far as i know .. the way i did it for myself . if you fit other wheels it may be different or better i dont know .

does anyone have a part number for longer studs? the ones I got the knurl is about 4 or 5 thou bigger than the stock ones…

well as you can see here, it only lists 1 type/ size of stud for the front m12 x 42mm for steel wheels... although the site does list the alloy wheels only lists the front the steel wheel studs

for the rear

does not list the part number ... only spindles (hubs)with the studs in ... several choices

So this is how ford lists the part numbers will be the same deal at a ford dealers


or mk2 ,you have another choice that is your responsibility to work out if the same hubs and pick the right ones out

OR

My suggestion is to visit you local tyre and exhaust place ... they have to replace studs all the time and know more about it than you or I and carry stock.

Do you have the equipment to install the hubs? ..NOTE - it's not done with a hammer, you need in-situ installer puller kit.. or take the whole knuckle off and take it to a press.
