2018 1.5 PCV valve blocked?

Postby highroof » Sun Apr 26, 2026 5:14 pm

Hi, as title, 60k miles, oil forcing it's way out of the oil filler cap and dipstick. Van runs fine, no codes. Sudden high oil and fuel consumption. I don't think it's anything more serious than a blocked PCV valve, given the symptoms, and have read that it's a common issue at the mileage and age. Can anyone confirm or have experience of this?

Cheers, Andy.

Well no complaints so far

Not even sure if like the other transits it has problems with injector seals blowing and it pressurising the cavity within the camshaft carrier and crankcase-- i just don't know
ive been looking at pictures and the injectors go through the cam carrier into the cylinder head , it looks like each hole is sealed to the cylinder head... that's what makes it a bit different.

if it is possible for the injectors to blow into the cavity .. then it would cause trouble like you describe ..

ive been here about 5 years now .. and no posts in the connect forum about injectors pressurising the crankcase.. and no posts about PCV valve.

Maybe other owners will chirp up .

when its happens on the bigger transits , a chuffing sound can be heard when the oil filler cap is removed as well as some visible pressure pulses and oil and fuel vapor being chucked out as fine spray.. and the filler cap will dance on the top when just placed there over the hole.

Done some more research .. dont think the injector pressurising the crankcase is possible with this engine .. and all other stuff points to PCV valve diaphragm.. if not that, you have a worn engine .

Ok, I needed the van asap, so had to pay £92 to get a complete rocker cover overnighted to GSF this morning. Bit of a downer when a pcv valve on it's own is less than £20 on ebay. But that wouldn't have arrived until Thursday, no good to me. I've had this van for 5 years and 30k miles and it's been absolutely fine, so you can imagine the head scratching when I removed the old pcv valve to find the diaphragm and large spring present and correct, but no plunger or small spring anywhere to be seen.

No real idea how the absence of this would affect it's ability to work properly, but I replaced it with all of the parts as Ford intended. I thought there seemed to be a lot of air pressure exiting the oil filler with the cap removed and the engine running, so had a seriously depressed few minutes thinking the engine was mullered. Until my mate with an identical van let me try the same thing on his, with the same results. I'm going to take a guess that when running, vacuum pressure takes over and the pressure then behaves as expected. I've done about 50 miles in it, and it seems fine, it's back to work tomorrow, about 80 miles round trip for the next 2 weeks, so we'll see.

The engine bay looked like an explosion in a Castrol factory after yesterdays discovery, this was after a bath in alloy wheel cleaner, brake cleaner and a blast with an airline.

I decided a bath was in order for the rest of it after todays excitement.
