Reverse gear selection problem

Postby CID Couriers » Sat Mar 29, 2008 1:57 pm

Hi everyone, I am having a problem selecting reverse gear and its driving me mad. When the engine is switched off it seems to select ok but when the engine is running it wont go into reverse. If I stop on an incline and let the vehicle roll back a little then it selects ok. I have changed the cables on the gear stick but this did'nt help. Would be very greatfully for any help. Thanks

Hi, thanks for that. I will look at that. Do you know if it is an expensive repair.

It depends what you class as an expensive repair

Its about 4 hours labour for doing the clutch plus whatever the parts cost

Hi Coconut,
I have had a word with my fitter and he seems to think it could possibly be something else causing the problem as there is no crunching or other clutch related problems with any other gear.Would it cause a problem with reverse first before affecting any other gear selection.Would really like to hear your thoughts or anyone else who has any ideas.

I only say clutch because a little while back I done a police connect which had exactly the same symptons. The police workshops fitted a new gearbox cus they thought it was inside the box, then they brought it into where I work, I thought it was cables, fitted a pair, no joy, box back out (it crunched into 2nd  ) thinking it was a faulty rebuilt one another new box, still the same, couldnt get the clutch to bleed, new master cylinder and pedal was good but still hard to get reverse, box back out new clutch and sorted, reverse everytime :D

I agree with coconut

Selection problems that disappear when the engine is off, are (almost!) always the clutch, and always in reverse or sometimes first gear, as those don't have synchromesh assistance :(

Hi Coconut & Altransit,
Thanks for your thoughts. I have passed on your replies to the fitter and we are going to change the clutch. Thankyou.
