2002 1.8 tddi gear change clunking

Postby tt600nb » Tue Aug 05, 2008 2:24 pm

Hi all
I just bought a transit connect on a 52 plate, its just passed an mot and the guy said that the rear gearbox mount was changed which it does look new. but everytime i change gear and let my foot of the clutch pedal it feels like the engine is going to come through the bulhead!! the clutch works fine and it goes into gear fine surley it cant still be that mount if its new can it? is this a common problem with these vans? also there is a whining noise coming from under the bonnet off side when driving, the drive shaft inner boot is split(gear box side) could this be the shaft/joint etc knackered?

Thats what i said but the previous owner says it was fine on the test!! also the passenger seatbelt was replaced as it was not there on test as a dog chewed it ive now discovered when someone is in the seat its an incorrect belt as it does not reach the holder!! dont buy a car or van from a guy called dave beal in maidstone!! i wont make that mistake again

thats what ive always been led to believe about boots inner can be split and still pass mot.

ive had my connect for a few weeks now and had simlar problems..

when you say engine feels like its gonna come through bulkhead? .. when i let my clutch out when in gear i do get possibly something simlarish but wouldnt describe as violently, on mine its like its a bit sharp on biting when lifting the clutch pedal up, you can make it clunk a bit if you drive it that way?

inner cv boot! i had to change mine, i did it myself in the end but it was a bit of a hassle (check out "annual service turns out expensive" if you wanna do the boot your self

ive also got some sort of belt noise onthe o/s side but havnt worked out what it is yet.

i wouldnt be too disheartened tho matey, it doesnt sound like you've been shafted

Cheers Rich
Its just the same as anything im leaving the army and setting up self employed and when you spend two and half grand on something little things just niggle at me its going to be my bread and butter really!! im going to stick into the garage when im back in the uk and get a full check done just for my piece of mind, ive had a quote for a headlight, seatbelt unit and complete drive shaft with both joints and boots for 199 quid so it will be a cheap fix anyway :D

Have a good look to see if 1, if the mounting bolts are tight 2, the mount is not upside down and hitting the subframe and 3, the bolts have been put back in wrong and hitting the steering rack

Whining noise sounds like the alt belt ilder pulley, see if it has a black plastic one between crank and alternator pulleys :!:
I miss my 'courtesy van'............140 Glx..now a Jumbo :(
