Van Cut Out. Glow Plug Light Flashing

Postby GKandR4CH » Mon Nov 28, 2011 5:06 pm

Hi all,

Coming up a hill today M2 (junction 3) poodling along at 70mph and the van just died.
I managed to get it into the hard shoulder and noticed that the Glow Plug Light was flashing.
So took the key out waited 30 seconds and started the engine. It drove about 1/4 of a mile and died again.
Now I started to worry.
I waited one minute started the van again and it drove home beautifully with no problems.
I have looked in the manual, but all it says is that it's a Glow Plug Light.
Nothing mentioned if it flashes.
Can anyone advise?

The glow plug light doubles for the EMS warning. When my van showed the same symptoms (cutting out) it was down to the injectors. Getting your codes read should give some indication if its injectors or some other fault. Been a few posts about engine cutting out including mine.

Time to get the fault codes read, could be pedal, or injectors if TDCi or pump if TDDi or lots of other stuff

OK, have done a diagnostic check and there are no fault codes displayed.
This is a weird one.
Could the van just have had a funny turn. Maybe a blocked injector that cleared itself.
Just took it for a run and it drove beautifully with loads of power.

I did put a brand new battery on it last week. Could it have been that?

Never heard of this on a Connect, but this used to be a common fault on the VW Transporter. The issue turned out to be a frayed wire in the loom in the engine bay
- Would make a connection and run OK for a while, eventually work it's way appart and cause the issue you have.

Initially, turning the van off and starting it again cured the issue ... must have been co-incidence!
- Took ages to diagnose

Do a search, common issue with the connect, especially the TDCI.

Just hope yours has fixed itself GK. Can be expensive.

Mine is the TDCi.
I'll see how it runs tomorrow.
I've done a search and it seems to be very common especially going up hills!!! Which I was doing.
This sensor is £20.00 and the pedal is £60.00, both are new. So will get those first before I start mucking about with injectors and fuel pumps.

It's going to the Diesel Centre next week.
He reckons it's an injector as the van starts and runs after restarting it from stalling.
He told me NOT to buy a fuel pump as its highly unlikely to be that.
