Reverse cam with wireless

Eyup!

Has anyone had any experience with those cheap reversing cameras with the wireless connection rather than cable? I'd like to fit one to the campercube but don't want the hassle of hiding the cables until next time I have the roof lining out.

I looked at a few threads on these before xmas, all the links folks have posted are dead now, but quite a few members have them fitted so all we need is some new links or brand/model info from those who have them.

I assume as you are looking at cameras that you got the insurance sorted?

Insurance not sorted yet. AF have stopped using Kenetic which resulted in the huge hike in price. A reversing cam was mentioned often when getting quotes, and I'd already considered one, so I'll just get one anyway.

I'm likely to change to Comfort, the only snag is they want a gas safe cert, so I need to get one sharpish, only two weeks to go (and three on the Mot!)

I'm going to make a bracket that sits around the interior light to place the monitor approximately where the mirror would be, this would also help support the silver screen I have for the windscreen as the suckers on it go where printed area around the mirror is so won't suck!

There's pretty much a clear line-of-sight from where the transmitter and receiver would go so can't see any issues there. Camera will be powered by the reversing lights, monitor by the split charge relay that runs the fridge supply.

I have one, that I was bought for a present when I had the Mk6, because some of the places where I used to park, people had a habit of parking a motor bike, or a scooter directly behind the rear doors where it couldn't be seen in the mirrors
It worked well in the Mk6, as it had a wooden bulkhead, and was a SWB, but not so well in the Mk7 with the steel bulkhead. I had to bring the camera sender unit as far forward as I could, almost to the rear of the SLD, to make it work, but as said, it's still a bit iffy in the mk7.
You may be OK, if you have line of sight, but I think that these are more suited to a car which is a shorter distance.

Thanks for the info. The wifi has to work over 4m if I mount the receiver on or in the overcab locker, so only a piece of half inch ply if in the locker, and a carpeted piece of quarter inch ply above the rear doors to work through.

Hi ,

I fitted a Vastend V01 wireless reversing camera to my mk5 Duetto in October, the 7" screen is plugged into the cigarette lighter socket and the camera is mounted on my bike rack and wired into the reversing light, it works flawlessly - i can park within an inch of a wall.

An interesting bit of info has come up... apparently the wireless connection can interfere with DAB radio reception. My DAB aeriel is above the sliding door, near where I was looking at mounting the wireless receiver. I do tend to use DAB rather than FM so may wait until I have access to fit a cable.

i managed to get a cable into the walls of the campercube on friday, and started tooking at displays. It's nearly 20 quid for a screen! Not that long ago they were less than a tenner, and all they do show a blurry pic for a few moments whilst you reverse.

Then I thought about dashcams with rear view, and I can get an unbranded three view allegedly-HD dashcam off eB•y, with a camera, for a few quid more. I think that's the way to go.

Ive got a 4 cam wired in system (and a 2 cam head unit) , from what i've seen messing about swapping cameras and such is that most cameras are the same (tested against a home CCTV cam) it's the screens that give a better picture :? my 8" screen i got with the system is pretty dire but when i ran the same cameras into a DVR and then into my sony TV the picture was miles better :D

I don't feel the need to spend a small fortune on a dash cam as I want it to function primarily as a rear view cam, so I think I'll give this one a go...

dashcam0.jpg

It's got a four inch screen so big enough to be useful, and an adjustable front camera so the screen can be mounted at a sensible angle to view when reversing. Only a few quid more than the same without the extra camera and 6m of cable.

The dashcam arrived today. And it'll be going back on Monday morning.

The cam itself looked okay, and it didn't take long to work out how to use it (it only had Chinese instructions), but the rear view & reversing feature was woefully inadequate. It was supposed to be a wide angle lens, but it was actually quite focussed. The camera on the back of the Tramp has a view wide enough to see the bottoms of the doors so there's a good sense of scale, and the spare camera I already has a similar field of vision, but the camera that came with this could only see a small patch of floor between the doors, so pointless. It was also very laggy and movement caused the picture to blur. The four leds on the cam were as much use as a tealight.

Oh well, I suppose it's back to Plan 9 and a dedicated if budget reversing monitor.

The wireless one I put in a volvo isn't great.

For my camper I was considering using a longer video wire and running it under the van - rather than pulling the interior etc out

I've got a cable in now, using chimney sweep poles past the cab headlining up to a speaker hole at the back. This time I've left a draw wire in place in case I need to do it again.

Next self-build I'll think more carefully about redundant cables for upgrades.

Just for others reading, I tried a few wireless ones. Maybe I was unlucky but they didn't work. I ended up running tv cable for the camera signal and independent wires.

I bought a AUTO-VOX M1W Wireless Reversing Camera Kit from the jungle shop back in June and it works fine. The biggest issue I found was feeding the wires into the rear door pillar from the door and from inside the van. There has been some interference with the signal as we've trundled along the motorway but not at the crucial moment when we need it, we overtook a horsebox and had four horses appear on the monitor. :)
