microwave

Postby misty » Mon Jan 07, 2013 6:54 pm

Hi Guys,
After a lot of perswasion (spelling) from swmbo we got a microwave, we normally go to sites nowadays so will be on hook up, but still at shows and the odd day out we need to power it from l/batts,
We got a daewoo 14 Lt 600 watt from asda direct,
So got 1000 watt inverter and connected to my starter batt, reason that we will run the van when using it so the power will be drawn almost from the alternator, saving damage to my relay,
Well fully tested, milky coffee and a ready meal on the beach yesterday, wow I know how to treat a lady hey,

Your still be discharging the battery as the alternator won't be able to keep up with demand, my baby 450w micro will drain my 200ap battery bank in around 15=20 mins.

Also watch out as some microwaves will triip out campsite electrics, especially those sites only offering 6amp connection

thanks AK,
will watch out for that, its all a learning curve for me, thats why the lights dimmed while it was on then, my relay is a dual sensing one so must have been drawing power of the leisure batts aswell hey, will need to keep an eye on the volt meter cant run out of power in the lesisure batts swmbo will dip out on tv,

I got a clarks conversion, 8 seat running water kitchen with micro wave thetford in the back. Not used microwave yet as I'm concerned about battery usage. Anyone know if there's a proper way to operate it. I thought using it with the engine on would be the way to go, but got me thinking now. Maybe off the aux batteries for the odd burst is the way to go, it's got an isolator fitted so thinking it was not designed to run off the alternator or engine battery. Surely though with eight workmen all heating there chicken curries and ginsters they are good for an hour? It's a clarks supplied one 12volt btw don't know the wattage. Can find out if it helps though.

Has it got two batteries linked side by side . Mine was like this but batteries didn`t last 15 mins, used to run the engine for the microwave to warm me pies up. Always seemed to be ok. I used to turn my hot water on when i was on the move ready for a tea break....

Yep two big batteries. Just got the water system going. Pump didn't work, but disconnected it and wired it direct to another spare battery and it fired up, bit weird though coz the light on the fuse box still lights up!

How long would you run the microwave with the engine on, any worries on damage to alternator or electrics?

About 10 minutes or so at a time. I was not aware i could do any damage using it this way until now. It was always ok though i never had any problems.
