Lining Carpet Help please

Postby Justsomebloke » Fri Aug 22, 2014 10:26 am

Hi All & Thanks in advance for any help/advice offered. :)

Ordered my lining carpet by phone yesterday from Mega Van Mats & it came first thing this morning, Epic delivery service. 8)

I got no fitting guide though which has thrown me a bit as I haven't even seen anybody fit this let alone had a go myself  Phone MVM & they are Shut till Tuesday

Youtube/Google have been a bit of a help but info is light on the ground, Can somebody post me an Idiots guide on how to fit lining carpet.
At the mo I'm thinking rough cut the piece I want to fit, glue both surfaces, wait for it to go tacky, fit, stretch & manipulate carpet to get into edges etc, Trim off with uber sharp stanley blade. Try to tuck as many egdes under van trim as poss.
Am I right, Close or way off the mark ?

For anybody else that is diving in head first without a Clue here's what I learned.

1. It is just as awkward as you think it will be, No scrub that it's far worse.

2. You can do it on your own so don't worry Billy No Mates.

3. There is no real good info on how to do this anywhere that I could find, There are a few speeded up videos of Pro's doing it but none that are any real help to a Noob like me.

4. I measured & cut out 2 lengths of wood the height of my van & 2 small blocks to act as wedges, I wedged the carpet to the roof using these 2 sticks 1 at each end & wiggled & messed about until I thought I had it where I wanted it.
I started to the left of centre on the roof & worked down to the bottom of the back of the bench & worked from back of the van to the front.
I honestly couldn't find a rhythm or an easy way to do it right up till the last piece I put up, Even at the end I still have no clue on how to do it, The liner is up there that's all I can say.

My Tip would be to Not Ask me. +

Bottom line is though they charge 700 quid to do this for you & of course it will look a lot better than mine but mine cost less than 200 quid & it was my first time doing anything like this so I'm standing back & am well happy which lets face it is all that matters. 8)

Hindsight.

The way forward & to get Excellent results from the first panel to the last is to remove your boarding do the lining carpet then fit the boarding back up.
Took me untold hours of doing it & finishing it to realise what was staring me in the face from the get go, ******* typical.

Take your boarding out, line van, line boarding, screw boarding back in place, Looks Mint.

You just can't help making mistakes first go at this, getting the odd crease or not quite cutting it up to mark leaving a bit of paint showing or summit.
Where as putting lining carpet perfectly on a removed bit of board can be done by my Frank staffy dog with 1 paw tied behind his back.
So the way forwards is to remove all your boarding, carpet line the inside of the van the best you can & then carpet line the boarding/panels.
When you fit the boarding/panel back in the van any small mistakes you have made on the interior of the van won't be seen because of how good the panels you did out the van look. :D

Stating the obvious to most I bet but it wasn't obvious to me until I finished doing it the hard way. Did the last couple of panels of mine in my house then carried them out & fit them in the van, All I could see was how good the panels look, Takes your eye right away from any small mistakes in the van. :D
